The 'Famous people who you actually admire thread' thread. - HeK - 02-19-2011 Here's a new time-wasting/discussion spawning thread. What famous people do you actually admire, for reasons other then being famous? People who may be well known for something, but lead extra-ordinary lives? I'll start with Dexter Holland, singer and lead guitarist of The Offspring. Besides starting a successful punk band and owning his own recording label, Bryan 'Dexter' is an interesting guy. For one, he holds both a Bachelor's degree in Biology and a Master's degree in Molecular Biology. He is a licensed Airline Transport Pilot and a Certified Flight Instructor who has made a solo trip around the world in ten days. He has his own brand of hot sauce, it's called 'Gringo Bandito'. All around, pretty cool guy. Re: The 'Famous people who you actually admire thread' thread. - [SiN] Merc - 02-19-2011 I've always admired Harry Truman, he had to make a ton of difficult decisions in office, and he held himself accountable for them. "The buck stops here" was a really good saying that I wish our current political candidates took to heart more often. Re: The 'Famous people who you actually admire thread' thread. - Hobospartan - 02-19-2011 Teddy Fucking Roosevelt. He's a goddamn bullmoose Re: The 'Famous people who you actually admire thread' thread. - Geoff - 02-19-2011 emiliano zapata hero of the common folk Re: The 'Famous people who you actually admire thread' thread. - Luinbariel - 02-19-2011 I really like Ewan McGregor for doing different things and for always seeming to be genuinely happy. Out of all the famous people that I've seen smiling, he seems to be the only one who really actually means it. Re: The 'Famous people who you actually admire thread' thread. - Dave - 02-19-2011 Peter Hook. Re: The 'Famous people who you actually admire thread' thread. - Vongore - 02-19-2011 HeK Because somehow he is able to fix my PC on my constant fuckups :-* REALY famous people, i'd say Truman Capote and a bunch of Chilean journalists, like Sergio Paz who is given a random subject each week (Most of the time Celebrity gossips just to test him) and somehow turn that column into something really interesting by pointing really interesting subjects and worldwide issues that make total sense with the gossip but only on a way he can do it. Peter Motherfucking Hook. Yes. +1 Also, Paul Banks of Interpol. Not just a fantastic musician, but even after four albums they still haven't sold out. Not to mention, a genuinely awesome guy. He's one of the few musicians I've seen/met who honestly appreciates talking to the fans and hearing what they have to say. That's rare in bands that can play large venues. Re: The 'Famous people who you actually admire thread' thread. - PyroZombie - 02-20-2011 George Carlin; Other than being one of the funniest men I've never seen live, He was a brilliant and bright man, who spoke his brand of truth no matter where he went, onstage or off-stage. The inflection of his accent, the choice of words, the bluntness of the message; It spoke to me in a time I really didn't know who I was. During this time, I was a truly depressing character, someone who lied himself to thinking that nothing was wrong, I was needing to be well-liked. Then I saw my first Carlin special, it was around maybe 8, maybe 9 years ago. It made me laugh, but the aftermath had a resounding effect. Just as he looked closer to find the bullshit, I started looking through my own brand of bullshit, and I began starting to fix myself, started exploring more into my life, my interests, and those I found around me. Today, even though I'm a semi-depressed loser, still living in a town that should have been a fucking crater by now, I'm content with myself. I may not find a lot of good in the world today, but when I find something good, something truly un-fucked-up, I find the finest kind of good. And I thank Carlin for that, because I don't know what kind of monster I would be if I wasn't able to see the bullshit, and I miss him, and his ability to say the truth we need to hear, rather than the truth we want to hear. I don't think we're going to get that back. There's lots of promising comics, but I don't think we'll see another Carlin, or hear another seven words the same way. I also believe he's gotten a bad rap that he doesn't really deserve. Re: The 'Famous people who you actually admire thread' thread. - Turtle - 02-21-2011 Gary Busey is my idol |
