Employment - A. Crow - 04-11-2009

Caff got one of these, for a much less cool job- I feel entitled.

Many none of you have been wondering, "where has crow been?" this past month or two "I mean, he still showed up at FNF on occassion and then it all stopped."  Well, I'll tell you.  I've been living out of a suitcase for the past month, working with only my laptop, which will not run tf2 or l4d, after some interesting difficulties involving housing.  During this time, I've had (and continue to have) a position in human resources at a horse track.  No, this is not the cool part.  I've much to discuss, mainly about the absurdity of HR, but will forgo that for now.  This Tuesday I swore into the US army reserve.  I have a platoon leader slot with a combat engineering company.  I went reserves because I wanted to make sure I would be guaranteed the officer branch of my choosing (corps of engineers), but I plan to volunteer for deployment (it really is as easy as raising your hand to get deployed as an officer) after they're done training me up (about February of next year) so I continue getting paid well.  I'll get my own little platoon of sappers with which to cause chaos, panic, disorder, and rapid/violent deconstruction upon whatever the fuck I'm allowed to.  So, that's my plan for the recession; kick down doors and blow shit up.  I ship out at the end of May for BCT, then OCS, then BOLC II & III.  I'll be able to use my laptop from BOLC II forward, which should be mid-November.  I've been considering this for awhile, and it should assist me in scoring a job more aligned with my goals later.

Re: Employment - sarcasticsteve - 04-11-2009

Damn, wish I had thought to do that.  How come Steve never got a 'Whatever happened to good ole Steve?' thread?  Well, for those who didn't know, I joined the Air Force (active duty, not a weekend warrior like Crow) just shy of a year ago now Big Grin

Have fun at boot camp, it's a real treat, especially the free haircuts and physical training!

Yes, it's lovely. The military is always retarded, if you're not recruiting recruiting, if you're not retarded. I remember years ago when I was considering. I'll still probably go National Guard and be a weekend warrior while I teach high school. Supplemental income.

Anyways, we'll miss you around here Crow, what with your multiple brain cells and all. ^_^

Human Resources is the bane of any corporation and should be done away with.

Yeah, it really is.  I'm the friggin Gman at work right now; if you see me, you're in for unforeseen consequences.  Since the economy is in the shitter, we got like 3x as many apps as normal so all the department heads are in a "fire at will" state of mind.

And yes, I'll be a butter bar, after 9 weeks of basic as an E-4 (Specialist) and 12 weeks of OCS (payed at E-5 Sergeant, technically a "Commissioned Officer Candidate").

Re: Employment - Surf314 - 04-12-2009

Dude that's actually kinda nice going in as an officer candidate.  I'm not gonna lie, I've thought about military before when things have been crap.  Plus I feel like they do a decent job of matching people up with the position that fits their abilities.

I agree with this wholeheartedly. I remember working in insurance and I was sexually harassed; I went to HR and they said that it was up to me to deal with it. Needless to say, I got the hell out of that company.

Re: Employment - fyre - 04-12-2009

Sorry for being a dickhead, Crow. I still love you. :-*

(But I do really wish you hadn't joined up.)

With the military's penchant for acronyms, you'd think they'd have caught on to the jokes.

Hehe. What if they gave you like, a key that you carried with you during OCS? So it would... your Commissioned Officer Candidate's Key? You could wear your C.O.C.K. around your neck.
