I was having dinner the other night and making a similar argument, but without half the dots that he connects there. One thing he missed, though, is that apple has tried for years and years to make headway against MS, only to get marginal progress. But that was when the only real battleground was the desktop. I see the iphone/ipad as a way to stop fighting MS on MS's home turf - Apple's betting hard on mobile computing being a second front to vault past MS as the default OS. That said, the "death of the pc as we know it" is always overblown. This should be an interesting fight because everyone loves to love Google for being open but that very fact makes them harder to make money with, and everyone loves to hate Apple because they are closed and nazis but owning the only gateway to the device has benefits including making it hard to pirate and easy to pay people money for their products. Re: Neat stuff (non-lulz but interesting things) - HeK - 04-30-2010 I'm on week three of an ongoing argument with a mac fan-boy at work over Flash. He is trying to tell me that Apple has forced many sites (like Google's Youtube to convert from flash to open standard like h.264) to move away from Flash simply by fear of incompatibility. I keep telling him that h.264 and HTML5 are not replacements for Flash. They do different things. I don't know if Apple's mouthpiece really understands how the web uses Flash, beyond the impact on the control that they have in corporate marketplace. Re: Neat stuff (non-lulz but interesting things) - A. Crow - 04-30-2010 they don't. Apple has become the avatar of hipster ignorant bandwagonism. Kinda like Fox news except for minimalism chic. Re: Neat stuff (non-lulz but interesting things) - rumsfald - 04-30-2010 (04-30-2010, 01:23 PM)HeK link Wrote: I don't know if Apple's mouthpiece really understands how the web uses Flash, beyond the impact on the control that they have in corporate marketplace. Their mouthpiece may or may not (I'd say probably does), but it seems clear that their strategists understand that flash apps via the web offer a free (and cross-platform) alternative to app-store apps. Re: Neat stuff (non-lulz but interesting things) - A. Crow - 04-30-2010 I'd like to pretend they're just stupid kind of uniformly evil instead of the thinking type of market cornering evil. It helps me sleep better.
