Re: Android Phones - zaneyard - 04-07-2013 ehh, avoid contract phones like the plague. I see you have GSM coverage. Buy an unsubsidized nexus 4 from https://play.google.com/store/devices/details?id=nexus_4_8gb&feature=device-featured#?t=W251bGwsMSwyLDIwMiwibnVsbC13ZWJfaG9tZV81MDAwMDA1X25leHVzVVNfZGV2aWNlc19VU19fNTAwMDAwNV9uZXh1c1VTXzFfcHJvbW9fMTM2NDIzMTAyMzQxNCJd and get a pay as you go SIM card. I'm sure others can recommend more on the carrier side of things. The only good phone you listed there is the SIII to be honest. I don't really know what you're looking for but if you're signing a contract for 2 years you might as well get the latest and greatest? I haven't really been following any of the buzz about the new HTC phone so look around about that. Basically, top dogs right now are GalaxyS4, One, Nexus4. I don't know what your budget is or anything but I would personally recommend not signing a contract for a shitty company to get a shitty phone. If your current phone works fine, save up til you can buy an un-subsidized phone if you really need to scratch the itch to get something new. I'm going to take pics with a new phone camera rather than an old phone camera or an old point-and-shoot camera. I'm also on a business contract with at&t; my slice of the bill suits me fine, even considering the LTE data plan. Galaxy S3 it is. It has otterbox cases available, and I don't have to root it to get cyanogenmod onto it. Though I don't think any of the major manufacturers have started putting decent camera sensors in them yet; although I could be completely wrong. Re: Android Phones - Eightball - 04-07-2013 Yes yes galaxy s3 Re: Android Phones - k0ala - 04-08-2013 This rules. I had to root it with ODIN to get Clockworkmod recovery, then a few false starts later, I have CyanogenMod 10. Chrome for Android is like taking off the training wheels I had with Safari. This camera is better than ye olde Kodak EasyShare so I will count it as an upgrade. Re: Android Phones - HeK - 04-08-2013 (04-08-2013, 02:35 AM)k0ala link Wrote: This rules. Dunno why you'd have to root to reflash. You should have just unlocked the bootloader, worst case. Re: Android Phones - k0ala - 04-08-2013 I know it should have been easier, but while Heimdall saw the device, it couldn't claim the transfer method. Ah well. I've got CM 10.0, swiftkey, and widgetlocker. Can't use nova until I grab CM 10.1, and I'm going to take a breather before I install another firmware image. Re: Android Phones - Surf314 - 05-27-2013 Seriously considering jumping ship to an Android phone. Does anyone have any recommendations or advice on changing from Apple's ecosystem to Google's? Re: Android Phones - zaneyard - 05-27-2013 There's a lot of apps that exist for both iOS and Android but unfortunately you'll have to purchase them again. Android is very powerful but you may be overwhelmed with the amount of freedom in customization at first. Galaxy Note v. whatever else v. waiting on something new to release? Re: Android Phones - zaneyard - 05-27-2013 I'm still running a Galaxy SII I'm sure the SIV will be supported by ROM devs for a long time. Galaxy S4 Google Edition Or wait until fall for the Nexus 5. It is really worthwhile getting a phone directly supported by Google. Manufacturer support is very slow and third party support is only as good as developers own their phones; ~2 years after their release. Re: Android Phones - Eightball - 05-27-2013 Reporting in regarding the Galaxy Note II. This is a big fucking phone; another inch larger and it's a tablet. I suspect that only basketball players would be able to one-hand it--I sure as hell can't. Despite this, it fits in my pockets (and the center console of my Fit!) nicely. Display is good, though the resolution is the same as the S3, and doesn't hold water to the S4. Tablet pen functionality is novel, and does manage to be occasionally useful. Occasionally. Battery is pretty strong if you leave the display alone; it could probably make it through a weekend if I controlled myself. I got a flip cover for it, which I'm kinda disappointed by. It looks very nice, but really gets in the way (imagine trying to open up a phone that you already can't one-hand, while in costume at a crowded convention) and has started to fray around the edges (after only a month or two!). So, I wouldn't bother with that. I'd rate it 4/5. For reference, I'd also rate my galaxy S2 skyrocket 4/5. Get it if you want a beast of a phone, or can make real use of the pen function. I'm enjoying its tablet-like traits in the absence of my Nexus 7 (godspeed). Re: Android Phones - StolenToast - 05-27-2013 I also want a new android. I have a verizon upgrade to use. Are any of these that are free or <$100 good? I'm not really a poweruser and I don't want to spend $500 on a brand new phone. https://store.verizonwireless.com/store/bjs_allphones/phones Re: Android Phones - Versus - 05-28-2013 (05-27-2013, 12:26 PM)Surf314 link Wrote: Seriously considering jumping ship to an Android phone. This has happened to every iPhone I've had after around 2 years. I think it might be planned obsolescence or something. |
