Re: Pictures - kaese - 01-30-2011

Eightball, I'm going to be at your university this Saturday for a scrimmage. You should wear that and obviously cheer my team on.

Haha, neat! When will you be around? I know a pretty amazing restaurant we should hit.

Sometime in the evening, I think we are supposed to arrive by 5:45. I'm leaving same day though, since I work Sunday morning.
What restaurant? I might know of it.

Joy Yee's Noodles; good food & value all around. Also bubble tea.

Never heard of it, but I'll suggest it to the team (and I'm not the biggest fan of bubble tea, to be honest. please don't shoot me.) Apparently we got invited to one of the northwestern frisbee parties too for Sat. night so the schedule's all over the place.

Re: Pictures - Didzo - 01-30-2011

It stopped being called "bubble tea" around here years ago.

uh all of my friends from california (socal, mid-state, norcal) still call it bubble tea, where are you then

Re: Pictures - Luinbariel - 01-30-2011

We still call it bubble tea

But here, it's more of a summer thing for obvious reasons.

SoCal. But I only see it as boba. Maybe it's just the places I get it at.

:-\

Re: Pictures - Versus - 01-30-2011

boba just refers to the squishy things at the bottom. calling it "boba tea" isn't really inaccurate, bubble tea is just more accurate. i dunno. i've heard my asian friends call it "bubble tea" and "boba tea."

When I order these things, either at a place that specializes in them such as Tapioca Express or Lolicup (no actual lolis, sorry), or pretty much any Asian eatery or restaurant that has more than the typical drink selection, the format usually goes: "I would like ______ tea/flavor milk tea/smoothie/slushy with/without boba.

I've never really heard anyone call it "boba tea" before, and I've only encountered "bubble tea" or "pearl tea" on advertisements outside of smoothie or coffee places frequented mostly by white people.

And then I went to Wikipedia.
Quote:A common misconception in its English usage, the name "bubble tea" is often associated with pearl milk tea. However, "bubble tea" simply refers to the shaken or whipped drink base. "Bubble tea with pearls" is a more accurate description of the Taiwanese shaken/stirred/whipped tea containing tapioca pearls. Pearl milk tea (of which "bubble tea with pearls" is a subset), also known as "boba milk tea", can refer to any milk tea commonly used, such as Hong Kong-style milk tea, combined with tapioca.

And now I want to go get some.

Re: Pictures - Versus - 01-30-2011

me too but the only local place in austin that has it and i've been to wasn't very good. Sad

the place in california we usually went to was a small Quickly.

Oh god now I want some.
Anyway, I hate the stuff that's blended ice (smoothie-style).  Blech.

Re: Pictures - HeK - 01-30-2011

There's about 15 Bubble Tea shops here, my favorite is the one that's open until 4 am, constantly populated by various Asians and has a wide selection of Hong Kong, Chinese, and Taiwanese Car and fashion magazines.
Best is that they use fruit in their drinks, not powder.

Re: Pictures - Turtle - 01-30-2011

There's a place here called Bubble Island and it's pretty good, except for the fact that the place is small as fuck and it's always like 90 degrees in there

Re: Pictures - kaese - 01-30-2011

I only know of a Bubble Island here, and it's in one of the campus food court places. This place is the reason I got turned off from bubble tea because the one I had was pretty disgusting (both in looks and taste).
I've had bubble tea from a place in LA, Toronto, and the Cornell U campus but they were all fine.

Re: Pictures - Eightball - 01-30-2011

The place I'm talking about does both real fruit and the powder stuff (if that's what you're into). I don't even get the tapioca half the time, the fruit drinks themselves are amazing.

Relevant: When I was like 6 my cousins convinced me that they were frog eggs. Didn't stop me :g
