On the dour note: The quote-unquote palestinians have no legitimate claims to the lands they're going after. There has never been a country known as palestine. That particular plot of land has changed hands numerous times over the years. Earliest secular history puts it under the control of the Ottoman Empire. Most of the people who claim to be palestinian are actually Syrian or Lebanese. Also, the people on board those boats that were boarded escalated it. They were told to go to a secure port and be inspected. They refused, thus getting boarded. Then when they started shooting at and trying to hit the inspectors with pipes, the israeli team defended themselves. Unfortunately, the video plays right into the anti-israel crowds hands since they get to have nice video of israeli commandos shooting "innocent humanitarian workers".

Palestine was on the map in the first Indiana Jones, your point is invalid. Also they weren't inspectors, they were a boarding party doing a terrible job and they weren't armed they took 2 of the boarding parties pistols. No one thinks they shot innocent humanitarian workers, they botched a job and gave free gaza exactly what it wanted (except maybe for the dead bodies).

read your own link broceratops. It describes a geographical location. Like, the area where I live is considered the "great plains". But it isn't a legal entity. The United States is a legal entity, Israel is a Legal Entity, Palestine is not nor has it ever been.

I guess this is the same authority by which we took all the Native American lands? I'm not saying the two are directly related I'm just countering one gross oversimplification with another.

Re: New/Improved Longest Thread - A. Crow - 06-01-2010

"Broceratops" is now my favorite word for today.

Also, you are both right, on different things.  Yes, Dtrain, they "freedom flotilla" was warned and brought it on themselves.  Yes, Surf, the Israelis fucked that bording up pretty epically.

But yeah, they were armed.  Realistically, if you're hitting me with a club, I can shoot you.  BUT, I'm supposed to try to club you back first to get you to quit.  Sometime escalation of force along the "shout, show, shove, shoot" ladder has to skip a few rungs or you get your ass handed to you.    The Israelis even brought paintball guns as a non-lethal measure, which is more than I would have done.

EDIT:
here, yes, this is what I'm saying:

I don't deny they brought it on themselves but the free gaza movement got exactly what they wanted from it. My two favorite quotes describing this so far is "They turned a 1 day story into an international event," and "Israel ran into it's own fist." Free Gaza is already sending out new ships and either Israel ratchets up the force and continue to get played or they have to back down and reconsider their policy. They've been backed into a corner propaganda wise and are going to have a hard time staying the course on a siege that most agree is ineffective especially if idiots are going to keep throwing their lives at them to push them out of favor with the world.

It's like reverse terrorism, I wonder if it will catch on. Seems to be more effective. I kill myself and a bunch of you I turn the world against my cause, I have you kill me in front of the world and all of the sudden the world is on my side.

Also I love that pic, when I saw the video I was like dear god why don't they just stop and climb back up, tear gas and try again.

Re: New/Improved Longest Thread - Black Aspen - 06-01-2010

The Israeli forces' biggest mistake was not yelling "Stop resisting!" over and over again while shooting at the crowd.  The world would have understood and totally sided with them if they had just done that.

My computer parts don't get here until tomorrow. Bah, I hate waiting. What's worse, is that my job interview is tomorrow as well. I just hope they don't miss me.
