I rented a copy of Thank You for Smoking only to get home and realize that it's the full screen dvd. >Sad Why the fuck do they even make these abominations?

because people like me still have SD TVs >:0, and at least i hate to see those black parts on the screen
[/quote]

I would rather see black bars on the screen than not see 1/4 of the movie.

I am toying with the idea of joining the National Guard. :-\

I have been told that basic training would beat me into shape. It might be an interesting experience. One of the main cons for me is that it's a long commitment and I'm very commitment shy. Also, I'd like to move to California within the next four or five years and I don't know if you can transfer like that or not.

clearly joining the military is the best and only way to get in shape

And it's not really the military, it's the Guard.

Join the Coast Guard instead then.

Re: New/Improved Longest Thread - Surf314 - 05-09-2009

My friend had two people die during his boot camp.  One had a heart attack while running and the other hung himself.  That kinda discouraged me.

They'll still ship you overseas, you want something "safer" do the coast guard or the navy

Will they? I wouldn't mind being deployed for natural disasters and stuff like that in the US, or if there was an invasion, but I couldn't participate in Iraq or shit like that. I thought the National Guard was supposed to, you know, guard the nation. Sad

Not so much a safety thing (although I obviously don't want to die), but I'm against foreign wars.

And I'm deathly scared of water, so the coast guard probably isn't such a good idea.

Re: New/Improved Longest Thread - rumsfald - 05-09-2009

Google the Total Force Policy

[tt]In 1970, while America was still fighting the Vietnam War, plans were made to reduce military expenditures. President Nixon wanted to streamline the nation’s military establishment, while maintaining the United States’ worldwide commitments. He also wanted to defuse war protests by ending the Selective Service draft...the president’s requested reductions of defense expenditures would require reductions in all facets of the active forces and increased reliance on the combat and combat support units of the National Guard and the Reserves. ...

The Total Force Concept brought a new level of support for the National Guard and Reserves. General Creighton Abrams, United States Army Chief of Staff, reorganized the "Total Army" so that the Regular Army could not conduct an extended campaign without mobilizing the Guard and Reserves, thus gaining the involvement and, hopefully, the support of small-town America. "
http://www.iowanationalguard.com/Museum/IA_History/Total_Force_Policy.htm[/tt]

Quote: With so much of the Air Force’s combat power placed in the reserve components, the nation simply could not have gone to war the way it did—on short notice and with unexpected demands—without the Guard and Reserve contributions......

The Air Force’s Total Force concept of operations has enabled the service to make the most of the Guard and Reserve. Reserve component forces have a hand in nearly every mission, and, when the requirements have surged, the “part-timers” have also surged to meet the challenge.

“ We are no longer a force held in reserve solely for possible war or contingency actions,” Lt. Gen. James E. Sherrard III, commander of Air Force Reserve Command, told a Senate panel in May. “We are at the tip of the spear.”

Under Bush/Rumsfeld, National Guard services was all of the danger, twice the risk of deployment, with none of the health and retirement benefits. No offense, fyre, but I don't think you'd make it past basic training, let alone a heavy deployment rotation.

Re: New/Improved Longest Thread - fyre - 05-09-2009

Yeah...I've been reading about that. Sad I'm pretty sure I could make it through basic if I spent a month or two getting in shape before though. I'm tougher than I seem. (Which really isn't hard tbh)

I dunno. I gotta do more research. On the plus side, if I did go in, I could probably have my choice of jobs since I got a super good score on the ASVAB in high school.

Re: New/Improved Longest Thread - Squishy3 - 05-09-2009

so fyre's joining the army now because he thinks it's cool? my friend did that and got kicked out at the end of basic

also basic training will not beat you into shape, it's not a dedicated workout regimen based around your body type and a diet based around your body type

:Smile I don't actually make major life decisions simply because of their cool factor. I don't think the military is especially cool anyway.

Not really talking about physical strength as much as mental.
