I am groot.

Just finished watching Sharknado 2: The Second One. It was better than the first plus lots of cameos. If you love campy Sci-Fi you are required to see it.

Re: The Movie Thread - Didzo - 09-21-2014

I watched Man Push Cart. It's a movie about an immigrant ex-rock star who now works by selling coffee from a cart in New York City. It's going for the whole bleak reality thing, but it is predictable and flat throughout. It tries to be depressing but all it did was make me wonder if there would be anything mildly interesting happening before it ends. It doesn't. Which is likely part of whatever the director was going for, but that doesn't make the movie any less slow and boring.

Sounds vaguely like how I felt about Rubber. Thought it would be awesome. Was very disappoint.

I think this also describes Flight of the Concords, but that show is so good.

Re: The Movie Thread - Didzo - 10-05-2014

So, I watched Only Lovers Left Alive tonight. Take parts elements of Twilight (romance with dark, brooding, "sexy" vampires) and Man Push Cart (bleak reality "portrait of life," focus on music) , smash them together and make them watchable, and you have this movie. I enjoyed it more than I expected I would going into it. Though it's a bit pretentious and nothing too exciting happens through the movie, it's cleverly written, has a droll sense of self-awareness, solid performances, and the atmosphere is to my taste.  If you enjoy listening to post-rock and/or Tom Hiddleston, you'll like this movie.

John Wick hype is real. Damn good revenge flick, but those dog scenes will hit you right in the feels.

It really weirds me out that I went to high school with a dude named Jon Wych. Same pronunciation.

Re: The Movie Thread - Squishy3 - 10-30-2014

Saw John Wick as well. Hype is real, for sure. Good cut and dry revenge flick with good shots and editing. Finally sat down and watched The Wolf of Wall Street. Why did I not watch this sooner?! That fucking scene where he tries to get down the stairs, oh my god. And then the scene in the house right after... literally dead

Re: The Movie Thread - matter11 - 11-03-2014

Saw the spanish movie REC that was later remade into quarantine. Quarantine was done so similarly it shouldn't be high on your list if you've seen it. Well done though, moderate spookiness

Re: - copulatingduck - 11-08-2014

Interstellar was pretty incredible, with one caveat; if you're the type who people might describe as "lacks empathy," you might want to take a pass on it. It's a visually and aurally (audibly?) stunning film, with the human condition being a big part of the focus. McConaughey and Zimmer kill it, and there's even a little bit of Damon who plays a small but crucial (and beautifully done) part. I could probably go on, but really, if you have any interest in this stuff, check it out. Fantastic experience, but also one long punch to the feels.

Re: The Movie Thread - Greatbacon - 11-08-2014

Any comment re: the IMAX experience?  Worth it?  Needs It?

Re: The Movie Thread - copulatingduck - 11-08-2014

I didn't do imax and still thought it did a fine job creating an epic experience without all that. If you can do iMax without too much trouble though, I'd definitely spring for it. Just don't think you're doing yourself an injustice if you miss the i-Max experience on this. Full disclosure: I've only ever seen 1 film in iMax (Superman lol) so maybe I don't have the most informed opinion with respect to that; though I will be trying to catch it next weekend in imax just to see how it compares.

Re: The Movie Thread - Surf314 - 11-13-2014

In my opinion Interstellar > Space Odyssey 2001.  I know it might be an awkward comparison but I think they both try to tackle a sci-fi plot from the same direction.  The big difference for me was that Space Odyssey 2001 seemed to be very clinical in its approach to the human element, whereas Interstellar tackles it head on in a very realistic way.

I'm a big fan.

Re: The Movie Thread - KarthXLR - 11-14-2014

I really wanted Interstellar to be one of my favorites of the year, but the constant exposition and stupid character actions kept taking me out of the film. Cinematography and most of the space stuff was great, but it's the little things that make me think that it will really fall apart on a second viewing.
