And a bunch of awkward first person and melee or something or other weird sequences. The action looks like it's OK, but considering the dev team, I'm severely worried that's all it will be, when action is the secondary occasional focus of a good Metroid game.

Ninja Gaiden played reasonably well, it just had "I'M GOING TO RAPE YOU" set as the standard difficulty. That, and a somewhat annoying camera, but I've not seen any hack-n-slash with a perfect camera.

Agree whole heatedly with the first. But the second is one of the reasons why I don't like the Prime games. At least you could ignore it in 1, but 3 shoves it down your throat. I just feel backstory in Metroid should be implied and inferred. Never exact, and never fully explained.

I thought Fusion pulled it off pretty well, but Prime 3 was ruined with story imo.
Also, that looks like recent Ninja Gaiden games in space. That's not a good thing...

Not that I have a Wii anymore, but it would be interesting to see if they'll make a good Metroid game for once. I've personally been unable get into any of the 3D Metroid games. They all felt rather dull and unexciting as far as shooters have gone. Something that is a mix of that with the 2.5D will be something to check out though.Â
A shame this was the only interesting release of Nintendo. Well that and the New Super Mario Bros, which oddly enough is the most powerful game on the console apparently, pushing the processor to it's limits, which is why there is no online play. The talk of Super Mario Galaxy 2 was rather...underwhelming. I played the first one, but I just haven't liked the 3D stuff since Super Mario 64. Super Mario Sunshine was weak and Super Mario Galaxy was alright I guess, but I was just going through the levels and not really feeling all that excited by it.
And no new Zelda is crap. Spirit Tracks looks pathetic and there won't be any new Zelda till at least next year.
This E3 has me glad I sold my Wii. Simply nothing that really excites me much anymore with Nintendo. Zelda is about it and that's far and few between to own the system and I haven't been into the handheld stuff for it in years.

Facepalm indeed, if you go into metroid thinking 'shooter' you will be bored to tears, Metroid is more about exploration and atmosphere, punctuated with bits of intense (but short) action.
