What are the advantages of this new model and why doesn't it seem to have a stand in the pictures ):

It doesn't have a stand, it has this crazy ring thing in the back, that you can slide it along to adjust the angle.  It seems interesting to me, though it might be troublesome if you need to pass things under your monitor.  The main difference I can see is it uses LED's for the backlighting, which means half the power usage, it's thinner, and potentially has better contrast and blacks.

I just think it's interesting because LED TV's and such have been sold at a price premium so far, but this is basically the same price as a comparable normal fluorescent backlit LCD monitor, meaning either LED lighting has gotten cheaper, or there never was a price difference and the novelty has worn off so they can start selling them at a normal price.

Re: Spore's New 'Pooter - Surf314 - 12-10-2009

Shit now I need to buy that monitor. BRB checking my bank accounts.

Re: Spore's New 'Pooter - Wedge - 12-10-2009

Yeah 1920x1200 is pretty nice, since you seem to be going all out on the price here.  That might not be a bad idea, especially with only one monitor.  I have two monitors, so only having 1080 is less of an issue for me.

Re: Spore's New 'Pooter - Spore - 12-10-2009

I would enjoy having that 16:10 ratio. I'll look into it.

Edit: I have deemed the 1920 x 1200 monitors too expensive for the time being.

Edit 2: I think I've come to a decision on what I want.

It's beautiful, isn't it? Anyway, when that pops back in stock I'll be there. Speaking of in-stock, the 5850 has been in-stock for two days. Is demand finally slowing?

Re: Spore's New 'Pooter - Stein - 12-10-2009

don't get AS5
don't get a 1920x1080 monitor, go for at least 1920x1200 since your budget is so high
don't go for raid 0.  For speed, go for flash drives, for redundancy, do raid 1 (I think that's mirrored?).  I would personally do a small flash drive and a 1tb WD green.

Alright. I think I got a mostly finalized list down. Check it.

Only question I got now is... 5850 or 5870?

Re: Spore's New 'Pooter - Versus - 12-11-2009

5870

Re: Spore's New 'Pooter - Wedge - 12-13-2009

I'm not really comfortable putting everything on one HDD like that, but otherwise it's fine I suppose.

Re: Spore's New 'Pooter - WaR1761 - 12-15-2009

I just wrapped up building a i7 920 build and love it so far!

Processor: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115202 Eats up programs like candy, its a beast for the price.

Motherboard: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131365 Has great options... haven't needed to overclock the processor yet, but I know it can if I choose to.

Cooler: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835118046 Works well, I get about 35-40c depending on if the dust filters are clean on the case.

PSU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139007 Dream to work with, modular is a huge bonus for cable management. 1000 watt wasn't necessary for this build but I have it in case I expand or swap out parts... I know I am covered.

RAM: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145242 Lowest Cas Ram at the time for DDR3

OS HDD: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820167005 Best thing you can do is get an SSD this feels like the final bottle neck with most computers today. Just make sure you get one that is MLC and has support for the TRIM command.

Storage HDD: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136284

GPU's: 2x in Crossfire http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102840&cm_re=sapphire_hd_toxic-_-14-102-840-_-Product

Sound Card: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16829271002
Wasn't really nessocery but I plan to use this for a sound system in the future.

Case: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811129043

The case was a dream to work with, nothing cheap about it... no rough metal, all painted. Very sturdy no flexing at all when its torqued. Was awesome for cable management, didn't have to drill any holes! If you want to do it right you have to get extenders for 24 pin and 8 pin power connectors that my motherboard had. I worked with a Antec 900... and it doesn't even come close to the 1200. if you got the extra buck splurge for the bigger case!

Monitors: 2x http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824009165&Tpk=acer%2027

Re: Spore's New 'Pooter - Surf314 - 12-15-2009

How much did that set you back?

Re: Spore's New 'Pooter - WaR1761 - 12-15-2009

I think in the end the CPU and innards was around $1700. However some of those parts have gotten cheaper... and I did go overboard on some. Monitors and peripherals I think I have spent over $1500. The monitors and speakers eat up most of that cost... however the G940, G19, G9 don't help either lol.

Re: Spore's New 'Pooter - Surf314 - 12-15-2009

Ouch, yea I put my computer together for about $1000 including monitor. I literally got every part on sale.

Re: Spore's New 'Pooter - WaR1761 - 12-15-2009

Oh if you are planing on doing any raiding get a dedicated raid card that does the processing instead of leaving that up to the main processor and OS. I haven't actually done it yet.. but I was planing on doing a raid 0 SSD setup for the OS... lol didn't want to spend an extra $500 for that speed.
