In grade 7 we were being tough photo-manipulation and we used gimp. Our teacher would always comment about how he didnt like the name and then somebody asked their parents what a gimp was. There was a big racket about the name of the program and we actually stopped that chapter early and moved onto computer parts.

Really, the only thing it has going for it is "content aware scaling" which I once a month or so. You can't even drag labels to quickly change a value or scroll through blending options with the arrow keys.
