I seriously have no issues with TF2 at max quality (without AA mind you) at 2048x1156 using a 512MB 9800GT.

If he's on a budget, his HD 4850 should do just fine. Crysis is another matter.
Generally video card memory limits your texture quality far more then anything else.

Re: My new more-awesomesauce computer - copulatingduck - 03-02-2010

just out of curiosity, what processor do you have HeK? I have an e8400 (old C2D @ 3GHz)

I don't get a particularly good framerate at high settings (very choppy with dips below 20), but then again, I see almost no difference when I set everything to lowest settings (so I can only conclude that my card is not the problem, and it's an old 8800GT)

if u want to flex ur epeen Gump... (I hit about 10,000 with my current setup from something like 2 years ago)

Cool shit, I just tried Vantage out--although I'm not sure how to interpret my results. My i7 920 had a CPU score of 42,000 which doesn't make much sense to me because they said an i7 975 had a score of 34,000. Graphics score was 10,000.

Without AA isn't Max then, is it? I play 1960x1080 full maxed and ultra high textures and only 4x aa because of that.

I know all about memory, and Crysis, and I curse Crysis for not even being happy on a 1 gig card.

I am also using an E8400. I wouldn't say it's old per say, it's no i5/7 but it is a 45nm core CPU.
Personally I cannot really justify upgrading until I see the next series of affordable CPUs using a 32nm core.
If you wanna pay to play, look at the new 32nm Arrandale-core CPUs.

THROBBING IN ANGER

seriously, though, people need to stop screaming out "BUT CAN IT RUN CRYSIS?!111" as a basis for benchmarks when the game itself is pretty awful.

I'll admit I lol'd pretty hard.

My old pic didn't really do the game justice, here's one I took during FFG LAN night just now

Every option in the game, including the ultra-high graphics autoexec enabled to max.  8)

Re: My new more-awesomesauce computer - Didzo - 04-03-2010

Teach me about these autoexec things I keep hearing about. Especially that one.

Re: My new more-awesomesauce computer - Gump - 04-03-2010

Well, I'll give you mine. It's short, but has important commands.

First, locate your */Steam/steamapps/Didzo(whatever your account name is)/team fortress 2/tf/cfg

You should see a bunch of .cfg files, named for each of the classes. Create a new file named autoexec.cfg (make sure that it's actually a .cfg file; you can change that in properties)

Then, once it's made, double-click to open it. Windows won't recognize the file, so you'll need to tell it how to open it. Pick Notepad, and copy-paste the following in:

mat_picmip -10
mp_usehwmmodels 1
mp_usehwmvcds 1
r_eyeglintlodpixels 12
dsp_enhance_stereo 1
cl_new_impact_effects 1
cl_burninggibs 1
jpeg_quality 100

Most of these you can figure out by yourself, but mat_picmip is the texture compression level. 'low' is mat_picmip 5, 'high' is mat_picmip 0, 'very high' is mat_picmip -1. mat_picmip -10 gives the best quality textures possible: http://img512.imageshack.us/img512/582/tf2compare3da8.jpg

mp_usehwmmodels 1 and mp_usehwmvcds enable the use of the high-quality models seen in the Meet the * videos as well as the improved expressions on said models.

jpeg_quality 100 just edits the quality of the screenshots you take ingame, as well as the quality of sprays ingame. Default is 90, I believe.

So, once you've pasted that into the .cfg file and saved it, go to your main Steam Games window and right-click on TF2, then click Launch Options, there, type in:

Quote:-autoexec

Make sure to follow any commands that are already in there with a space between each, like so:

Quote:-novid -heapsize 1048576 -autoexec -windowed -noborder

(This is my own preference; set to taste. -novid removes the startup video, -heapsize is relative to my amount of RAM (2GB), and the others run the autoexec (obviously) and put it in a full-screen mockup without borders.) After you're satisfied with your launch options (which will just have -autoexec in it unless you added others), hit OK, then launch TF2 as normal and enjoy. If you're not sure whether or not it worked, try getting lit on fire, then exploding. If your gibs are burning, great success.

There you go. Remember not to edit any video settings via the in-game options panel after you've used this config, or the high-quality models and textures will be reset until you restart the game, so thur you go.

I don't know why I wrote an essay on how to tell you how to copy-paste shit into a notepad file.
