Re: Need advice for a new desktop - Didzo - 07-28-2010 Man, you've got issues there. The mobo you chose is micro ATX... You'll want full ATX unless if you're building a computer for a tiny case. A mobo like this is a normal ATX and has triple channel memory instead of dual channel memory. That means you could get this memory (6GB) instead of the 4GB you chose, and still have room to more than double it. If you don't like that more expensive setup or think it's overkill, I really recommend considering AMD... I mean, getting an i7 and then not utilizing it properly is just a waste of money. Do yourself a favor and get the caviar black version of the hard drive regardless of the other parts. I really like your case choice though. Re: Need advice for a new desktop - Loqutus - 07-28-2010 I won't be editing video with it; will I ever need more than 4gb of ram anyway? It's still compatible, right? Even if it's small Thanks for the tip on the caviar black... definitely looks like it's worth the investment Re: Need advice for a new desktop - Didzo - 07-28-2010 (07-28-2010, 01:12 AM)Loqutus link Wrote: I won't be editing video with it; will I ever need more than 4gb of ram anyway? I mean, it is compatible... But then what's the fucking point? I mean, you're getting an expensive, powerful processor only to use a fraction of its potential. Then you get a tiny motherboard and stick it into a hulking beast of a case. I don't know if I'm crazy or not, but it just makes no fucking sense in my head. Re: Need advice for a new desktop - copulatingduck - 07-28-2010 Don't do microATX, especially if you're going with higher-end parts you want them to have as much breathing room as possible. Besides, if this is really your first build, you'll probably want as much room to work as possible (you'll probably end up doing lots of plugging/unplugging the first time around). You don't have to buy everything in one go, wait for a good deal on a fullsize board imo Re: Need advice for a new desktop - Versus - 07-28-2010 if you played APB, you'd want more than 4GB RAM. basically, if games are already coming out that perform better with more than 4GB of RAM...yeah. Re: Need advice for a new desktop - Didzo - 07-28-2010 I'll just leave this here... Ignore the ridiculously expensive RAM and the double disk drives, and replace the mobo with an updated one (I'll find links to both good RAM and a good mobo if my rig tickles your fancy). Re: Need advice for a new desktop - Loqutus - 07-28-2010 How about this one? This does what I need it to do, right My thing is that I like Asus Re: Need advice for a new desktop - Didzo - 07-28-2010 (07-28-2010, 01:38 AM)Loqutus link Wrote: How about this one? Asus is great. The size looks about right. However, you are getting an i7 and restricting yourself with 4 memory slots. Just get an i5 or an AMD processor already and save yourself a few hundred bucks you can spend on MOAR RAM or BETTER GRAFFIX or MOAR BETTER SCREENS. You'll save more money with AMD, as both the processors and mobos are generally cheaper than the Intel counterparts. I like Intel, but I'd like to see what AMD can do for the price. Will you select a chip/mobo combo so I can see the price difference? Same vidya card and whatnot Re: Need advice for a new desktop - Didzo - 07-28-2010 (07-28-2010, 01:48 AM)Loqutus link Wrote: [quote author=Didzo link=topic=4849.msg166542#msg166542 date=1280299572] Asus is great. Your processor costs $290, and the dual channel mobo you chose costs $200 for a total of $490. This combo with the AMD 965 and a good Asus mobo (better than the one I have) costs $305. You just saved almost $200, or gave yourself another $200 to spend elsewhere, depending on how you look at it. Re: Need advice for a new desktop - Surf314 - 07-28-2010 Damn I might get that case for myself and give my sister my current one. |
