when your hardware is unsupported in the OS that you SHOULD be spending money on, it's time to upgrade, not to buy a shitty OS Tongue

All you need is the key + legit install media, duder. I have a legit digitally distributable 7 installer if you want, you just have to supply your own key.

Is that locked down to student editions or will it work with any legit key?

I'd love to get my hands on that if it works for any legit version of 7

Re: OS? - at0m - 09-01-2010

AFAIK it's the key that limits your install, not the installer. So if you have a student upgrade key, and you're not 'upgrading' (or installing from scratch over an install of vista), it bitches and says you have an invalid key. Otherwise it'll work fine.

Re: OS? - K2 - 09-01-2010

I downloaded a legit ISO of Windows 7 and installed it on my newly-built computer before ever getting a key. 29 days later, I bought a student upgrade digital download for $10 and used the key to activate my currently-installed version with no problems.

The keys are only tied to the specific version (Ultimate, Professional, etc.) and if it's an upgrade. However, you can use an upgrade key for a clean install simply by not entering the key during installation and waiting until Windows is fully up and running to manually activate it. Also, even though they claim to only install a certain version of 7, you just have to delete one file from the ISO to get it to let you install whichever version your key is tied to (though you obviously can't change a 32-bit disc to 64-bit or vice versa).

Well after seeing this post I went digging again and found the email that had the product key. I'm downloading a copy of Win7 and upgrading today.

Re: OS? - at0m - 09-02-2010

Don't use a pirated installer, it may steal your legit key. Use a redistributable package of some sort. If you can't find one, I'll find a way to upload mine somewhere but it's like 3.7GB

if you've got a way to download and install Win7 Ultimate I'll take it. As it stands, I can't upgrade and I really really don't want to have to backup all my shit just to upgrade the OS

I've got 100GB of space and a server that can pull 50MB/s and I'm root.
