I like keeping the music I pirate pay for instead of renting it.

CRAPPY DISH?!?

Re: Apple Bitching thread - backfire - 09-10-2010

Oh, I didn't know we had one of these threads...

Well, imma use this to rant on about how this damn macbook that was forced upon me is defiantly the most unstable waste of money I ever had to deal with. In the year I've had this thing, I has completely locked up at least 30 times. Something I've noticed about the operating system is if one program starts to stall... THE ENTIRE OPERATING SYSTEM STALLS. Opera stalled which caused me to become trapped in the "spaces" selector thing and ended up having to restart the computer losing my hour of work. Oh, and while I'm on the subject, Photoshop has crashed about once every three days on OSX. Most recently happening WHILE I WAS SAVING... yeah, the save corrupted. Back on the operating system, I also had it "kernel panic" a month ago... while I was away getting a reeses from the vending machine. Nothing was even running on the damn thing. What the hell was it panicking about??

Now, I've had windows 7 on my main computer since the RC (upgraded to RTM straight from it) and I can say this thing has [i]NEVER received a blue screen and Photoshop has only crashed about 3 times over the couple of years I've had it. Best part is... Windows starts up at LEAST four times faster than OSX (and that's without booting from a hibernation state). Whenever I go on break back home and bring my laptop, I immediately switch the thing over to windows 7 (that I installed on the first bloody day I got the damn thing) and everything works fine. I simply DREAD whenever I have to switch back into osx to get to photoshop (don't have enough space on the windows partition to install it) because it takes forever.. However, when I wanna switch back, I wait for the 30 seconds for it to shut down, wait 20 seconds for the osx bootloader to boot windows, then within 10 seconds I'm logged back in on my windows partition. Yes, that's right... IT TAKES LONGER FOR OSX TO SHUT DOWN THAN FOR WINDOWS 7 TO START UP.  GRANTED, this was using hibernation but then again WHY DOESN'T OSX HAVE IT?

I keep that damn technological failure in my backpack at all times. Any files I need from it, I'd just throw in my dropbox before I take off from school. The only times I use that thing is in class and when I'm away, but the ladder always being in windows since OSX is just THAT MUCH OF A PAIN which can't even manage to keep a steady 20 fps on TF2 running at a lower resolution and all low settings...

When I'm done with school, I'm puttin that thing up on sale then using the money to buy myself a proper laptop... "Just Works" my ass.

</horribly structured rant>

It only wipes ass

Re: Apple Bitching thread - Stein - 09-12-2010

Backfire, I have the same issues with my school laptop.

At least you have admin access so you can mess with the software.  I'm barely allowed to do anything.  All I've done so far is disable all of the glass effects (dock, fancy icons in places, and transparent task bar) to get a little more speed out of the thing.  Since apple only needs to worry about marketing to stay afloat, they've stopped worrying about improving the "fuel economy" of the OS.  It takes more to do less.

While I understand that many power users are screaming and banging their heads against their desks, this is all for the best. The complex computers we use today are being replaced by simplified, task-oriented computers that are designed to help users work faster and focused on their objectives. Computers shouldn't be tools for computer scientists. Computers should be practical tools and sources of enjoyment for people in offices and studios,

Clerks, designers, engineers, economists, illustrators, architects, gamers, photographers, journalists, film makers, teachers, students, or musicians... for those people, everyone in the planet except a very few, the file structures and the windowed user interface are imposed by paradigms that have long been obsolete, crumbling conventions that have been growing in complexity through the years.
