Conversation went like this
"Hey dad, do you need help with something? Maybe helping you on some house chores?"
"Sure, help me do holes for some new plants we bought"

Your parents are terrible. If a kid wants to earn, and I mean actually earn, money why the hell would you not let them. IMO it made every purchase I made more rewarding (since I bought it).
