"No later than January 10, 2011, Sponsor will hold a random drawing for alternative entries received for each Treasure Hunt objective and for the Grand Prize drawing, using the same odds as applied for each actual regular drawing (determined by the number of regular entries for each Treasure Hunt objective). Sponsor will award prizes to each such alternative entry winner. Sponsor will contact each winner via email to the address registered to the winning account. The decision of the Sponsor will be final and binding in all matters."

So it appears alternate entries will have a separate drawing all together, completely separate from the standard method. Theoretically the odds are much better to win via this method since I doubt a lot of people will submit alternate entries. Of course the people who do enter with this method will likely enter for all 28 treasure hunt objectives, which means there is little "edge" you'd be able to get compaired to other entrants.

The bolded part is confusing though. Does it mean that they'll randomly select alternate entries depending on the odds of the finished sweepstakes from normal enteries, or does it imply that the odds will be determined the same way the standard odds are determined? Probably going to e-mail them about that.

Report back with your findings.

Re: Steam treasure hunt - KorJax - 12-07-2010

I'm 99% sure it's the former (odds are determined depending on how the normal contest went, and whatever those odds were are your odds of winning the alternate drawing against other alternate enteries) but I emailed gabe about it reguardless.

If it's the former then the best way to win would be to both do all 28 normal entries (goodbuy to your wallet though) AND doing an alternate entry, though the alternates might be void if you already did a normal entry for the category you submitted an entry for.

Also don't spread this around even though this is a public website anyways :p

I'd (and you all) would probably like to maximize our odds, which won't be possible if Kotaku/SA/Facepunch/4chan/major XYZ website all highlight the alternate entry method :p

You can never take all of Versus's money.

Re: Steam treasure hunt - BHHammy - 12-07-2010

Considering chime is only $1.25 right now because of this sale, and a large portion of that game's money is going towards a charity...

Sadly, I don't have that sitting in my Paypal because I'm a broke bitch. I do already have two of those achievements, though.

Chime was originally released as a nonprofit game, but that was a limited-time thing. As of a few months ago only 5% of the profits go to charity. Regardless, it's definitely worth $1.25. I got it on XBLA when it first came out, but I might buy it again just because it'd be a lot more convenient to play on PC.

Re: Steam treasure hunt - KorJax - 12-07-2010

you can still enter to the 5 games a day/100 games contest even if you dont do the objectives  by sending valve a postcard with your account name , the contest, and the objective you'd like to complete on it. no tf2 hats, but you can get extra entries that way. also someone might have mentioned that the alt entries aren't lumped in with regular entries so you probably have a signifigently higher chance of winning

Re: Steam treasure hunt - KorJax - 12-08-2010

Maybe. As far as I know there IS a separate drawing for alt entries, but I think they determine the odds of that drawing using whatever the final odds end up being for the normal contest. The alt entry drawing is done sometime within the first two weeks of January.

Also what I did was just buy a pack of 4x6 index cards at the store, filled 4 of them out, slapped a stamp on them (no old stamps as they must be post-marked with the correct date for each "treasure hunt" period) and threw them in a mail box.

Re: Steam treasure hunt - chronomaster - 12-08-2010

The way it's worded, it also seems like there's only one draw for each Treasure Hunt and Grand Prize, so there might be even less of a chance of being rewarded.

Re: Steam treasure hunt - Bonesinger - 12-08-2010

So here are the first two hats. Gold falls out of the second one.

Kinda wish they were different from each other, oh well.

Re: Steam treasure hunt - Coppanuva - 12-08-2010

I think the lack of the undeniable wealth and respect hat means they don't expect anybody to get one at all.

They have not released all the achievements, thus there is no way anyone could have "gotten" them all

Re: Steam treasure hunt - backfire - 12-08-2010

OH LAME

One objective is for New Vegas but there's not even a sale for it.
