Maybe a few pictures here and there, but I'm not going to be uploading all my passwords and my SSN and things that like to the cloud. I have lecture notes and things like that up there. I don't give a fuck if anyone has my history teachers powerpoints. Like its not already on the internet anyway. And I dont think you understand exactly what places like google and facebook do That is exactly how they make money, mining your data to sell to marketers. What you might not see as an invasion of privacy, some of us do, and Id be willing to bet that just from your school assignments a marketer could probably gleam a decent amount of usable data. No they wont take your passwords or SSH data, but I'd bet money it logs and forwards things like your browser history, what files you are using and when, what you access most often, and other seemingly harmless pieces of data. Google does some genuinely good things, and I would put more trust in them than I would something like facebook, but take everything with a grain of salt Re: Google OS Pilot Program CR-48. - sk8mystery23 - 02-08-2011 It's not like I have original written content on there. Yet. Lol. Re: Google OS Pilot Program CR-48. - at0m - 02-08-2011 You're forgetting several things. 1) Google expects this to become your primary computer. With no local storage, anything you'd normally have on your primary computer would be in the cloud. 2) Even for things you haven't specifically put on the cloud, your information may still end up there. Google stores every bit of data it ever collects. Ever. Then they use that data to do whatever they want with it. They use all of your gmail as a basis for their spam filters - the things you mark as spam are spam, and the things you don't (EVERYTHING ELSE IN YOUR INBOX PRIVATE OR NOT) aren't spam. They actually got in trouble for this because they were collecting and saving wifi traffic with the Google Street View cars. They were geographically mapping MAC addresses and SSIDs to locations with that, to supplement normal GPS and Cell tower positioning methods. But I digress 3) Given 1 & 2, I don't doubt for a moment that Google has fine print in the user agreement that allows them to run a keylogger to datamine every single keypress on the thing. I know they do with their phones. I'm not saying they're evil and are going to use this information nefariously, but given how M$ has been using the 'usage data' collected from IE and the Live Toolbar (i.e. reverse engineering Google's search algorithms), I don't doubt they'll find a way to make a profit from it. None of these things are going to prevent me from applying to get one though. I want to be the first one on the block. Plus, I welcome our new robot overlords. I'm not trying to argue everyone's points. I'm just trying to argue how I am going to use it. Re: Google OS Pilot Program CR-48. - Surf314 - 02-08-2011 I think there was a time when everyone realized skynet had won and people were just like "sup robot, you want me to do slave labor? OK!"
