Re: Mechwarrior Wednesday - Kirby - 06-03-2011

Does anyone who's actually played have any feedback on using a 360 controller for driving 'mechs?

<3 360 controller hooked into PC, so much awesome.

So are there presets for the mechs or do you have to create each clan/whatever mech via loadout?

There are pre-set variants of each mech and tank.
Each has a cost in C-Bills. You start with a base number of C-Bills (based on your rank, ranks governed by points) and you ear additional C-Bills for doing things like damaging opponents, recon, painting/narcing targets, defending bases, capturing bases, etc. If you die, you loose all your C-Bills and respawn with the base for your rank.

This prevents people from pulling heavy mechs right off the bat, tho it does allow players to pool their resources.

Re: Mechwarrior Wednesday - HeK - 06-08-2011

And Matchbox or Jaguar's are the only decent servers.

Re: Mechwarrior Wednesday - k0ala - 06-08-2011

it's good but frustrating

Re: Mechwarrior Wednesday - k0ala - 06-09-2011

getting the motherfucker stuck in a corner between two buildings and dying to 3 different colors of laser beams is SO much fun. I need to stop spending all my side's respawn tickets.

Re: Mechwarrior Wednesday - Kirby - 06-11-2011

Played online last night for the 1st time, went 3-5 my 1st round.  8)

I think all totaled over the night I was probably 14-30, and I had a fucking blast doing it. Probably would have done better if I had realized that I left my video card in it's vastly under-clocked idle mode and I was running at like a quarter of the FPS I should have been.

It's fun playing around in a Raven Prime tagging Maulers with NARCs when you've got a pair of Vulture C's standing by behind the next hill waiting for the go ahead.

It's also just as fun when the Mauler's buddy in a Novacat C gets wise to what you've been doing for 10 minutes and comes around the corner of an outcropping and drops you like a sack of shit with an alpha from 4 CERPPCs

Re: Mechwarrior Wednesday - k0ala - 06-11-2011

I guess that answers Dtrain's question of who would ever want to play IS

To keep the game balanced IS/Clan is just Red/Blue. You're not restricted to IS Mechs/Tech when playing IS, and vice-versa.

Yet. There is a server command that forces this though. No one runs it because the two sides are not balanced enough (in the sense that there isn't an even number of assets on each side yet to make it work).

And I love support roles! Frequently I've gotten to the top of the score board with only 4 or so kills simply by getting a mech that has C3 and using NARC's (C3 relays your radar to all teammates within range of you, and generates a nice heap of Cbills for doing it). The trick is to deal more damage than anything, and stay alive.

If you die all the time you are playing to wreckless. Slow down! There's a lot of value in going back to base to repair versus just killing yourself. You prevent the enemy from getting that kill bonus in cash, it's bad-ass to do, and you end up getting a lot more cbills and ranking by playing support role via dealing damage, being cautious, etc than you would by simply running in.

The nice thing about MWLL is that your primary method of reward can easily be gotten through supporting and damage. Kills are nice, and they get you a nice bonus in cash and ranking boost, but you can have 17 kills and still be making less money per minute than the guy who has 4 kills, but does all he can by playing smart and dealing damage across the whole team.

And the thing in the guide I posted about never doing combat at 100% throttle is very important. Not only does it give you better combat manuverability (you turn much better at 50% speed versus 100%), but your heat generation is also lower plus it makes you play more.. "aware" of your surroundings. You just end up playing more tacticfully and intelligently versus a dude who is always going at full throttle.

I mean, speed is obviously very important, especially in light mechs. But 9 times out of 10 you're better off coasting at 50%-70% throttle or lower in a battle situation, versus putting it at 100% Smile

Re: Mechwarrior Wednesday - k0ala - 06-12-2011

The thing in that guide that stuck with me is that people will know how much to lead your mech when you're running at 100%... but now that people have adopted the 50% rule of thumb, your better opponents have learned to draw a bead pretty reliably on a mech at 50% throttle, so stick it at 55% instead.

I've got 5 presets for speed (Livesaver in tanks that don't hold your speed when you let off W)

0%

5% (For ultra low idle long range firefighting, with only 5% you can stop in 1 step, aka instantly, to dodge incoming PCC/Gauss that were fired with a very slight lead)

42% (ololol ofc I chose 42% instead of 50)

75% and 90%

Also, how does everyone have their firing settings set up?

I've got mouse 1,2,3,4,5 set to fire their individual weapon groups (Do any 'mechs even USE FG5? Highest I've seen is 4, and that's normally a NARC)

Also is it as incredibly annoying to anyone else that they have multi-range lasers all grouped together? I'd love to be able to fire my 350m range pulse lasers independently of those 800m range beams, not to mention having a PCC fire off when I'm close range blasting someone with lasers and all of a sudden the PCC triggers too, and totally misses.

Hell, I used to use every group up to 8 in Mercenaries so I could fire individual weapon systems even if I had multiples of the same weapon. Much better for heat management.

Also playing last night, I can't remember the guy's name but he was obviously a good aero pilot (aero is fucking gay) who seemed to take a particular fancy for blowing my ass up diving with a Stella. After like 6 times popping my ass when I was preoccupied with something else, I swapped to a Huit Prime and hid in a building until I heard him pop someone really close to the base we were defending, rolled out and got many lulz as I shredded his Stella to shit. He never got to get another kill after that because he quit~~
