Neither do I, the lack of alcohol present is enough proof that I'm not in there...

Are they naturally protective of their medieval dressup cousins?

It's more or less the opposite. Furry makes LARP seem really dull and boring by comparison.

To make that more clear:

Furry = TF2. LARP = Counter-Strike.

Not really what I mean since "Furry" doesn't involve much...err...combat xD. I probably should of mentioned it's more a preference (like most things) then anything. I obviously can't comment for any of the other furrys on Brb but I know I didn't initially comment here just becuase it was really uninteresting to me and I had nothing to say.

Nah, you were pretty clear, Neonie, and I certainly was half-trolling.

But the other half of my intent is my interest in subcultures.  To me, LARPers and Furries seem to have many similarities: fantasy-setting or inspiration (mythical creatures, powers, etc), elaborate costumes, social aspects of gathering (conventions, annual events, etc), and yes, reference/character sheets.  And, like most subcultures, they are subject to ridicule and are the brunt of many jokes by the "mainstream." So, I was interested in the thoughts of the furries and larpers here (I know there are a closet few of the latter), do you see each other as cousins? A kinship through costumery, fighting off the ignorance and intolerance of the muggles?

Or rivals? Do furries make fun of/ look down on LARPers (like one furry I know here likes to troll the Juggalos)?  Is there a geek hierarchy for the costumed set? Where do the cosplayers fit in all this?

There are actually a lot of factors to consider on the whole really. I'm not into fursuiting at all really I'm into for the character customization (I <3 Aesthetics) and furry gives you a fuck-ton of options. But if I were to take a cosplayer, a fursuiter, and a LARPER and stand them next to each other, there are like three different levels of WTF you have to consider.

Furries: How elaborate in the fursuit? Is it well made? Could it be considered art in it's own right? (Since I'm also big into various art forms, again, aesthetics xD)

Larpers: How well made is the costume? Did a lot of thought go into the character? (Since it more often then not the person can't hide them selves under a giant head), how many times, do, exactly, you scream "lightning bolt" before you finally realize you aren't shooting anything?

Cosplayers: ENTIRELY aesthetics, and I personally look would consider these subordinates of both Larpers and furries since no individual thought goes into your OWN character design. If by chance it DOES look quite good though, then I'll give credit.

When it comes to furries and larpers, I would have to say credit is judged on an individual basis on the deciding factors I mentioned above. Overall though, I do find LARP to be quite uninteresting.

I hope that answered most of your questions x3.
