you have to get your resources set out straight from the beginning or you're screwed. if you don't have any energy or mass you can't build things in a good period of time at all.

What Squishy said, you really have to manage your economy well. Usually the person who best manages their economy wins. Of course doing a proper start for your economy often leaves you open to rushes as you are trying to get up lots of power plants and matter converters/harvesters.

Patch 3599 is the latest version I think.
Also, it only takes 5 minutes to build something if:
1. It's a high end exp units and you don't have enough resources to insta-build it
2. You suck
3. You are not assiting with multiple engineers to make it build faster
4. Your economy sucks (i.e. you are not building mass extractors at T1+T2, and no massfabs+power at T3, and you don't reclaim EVERYTHING by patrolling your engineers around the map).
FA's econ is much easier to get a handle of, as things build much faster and more efficent, but it's harder to master FA's economy while it's easier to master SupCom's economy (as all you need to do there is just spam mass fabricators and you win). On the flip side SupCom's economy is very slow and cumbersome to learn compaired to FA's economy (but once you learn it it's easier to get good at it).
