Dude! Fix up, that is unacceptable.

I have Okami, Katamari Damacy, God of War, Zone of the Enders I & II MGS2, and MGS3 rounding out my non-JRPG collection  :Smile

Good choices, except MGS3.  Screw that game.

I hated 2, at the part where you have to slam the guy into the eye scanner...I spent like 2 hours trying to do that before I just about broke the controller in half. Have not played the game since.

Re: Favorite/Best Boss Battles - Fail Medic - 09-02-2008

Hodge podge:

Zeromus, FFIV?  It felt really good to watch him collapse and even though his attacks weren't all that varied it was great just to throw EVERYTHING YOU HAVE at him and take all the safeties off and quickly do patch work between Big Bangs.  Well, that's for all final bosses, but this one really did it for me.

Dyna (Dyne?) from NES's Crystalis.  You're fighting a supercomputer with a magically-charged nuclear reactor's control rod reconstructed from earth, air, fire and water.  S'neat.

Juno from Mega Man Legends.  It is memorable because one time I fought him I had a crowd of 7 or 8 people watching me.

Lots of mentions of Chrono Trigger, but I dug the "final final final" fight in Chrono Cross where you get a neat but kinda-thrown-in reference to dear, sweet, poor Schala from CT.  Also, that eerie bell tolling of the final dungeon's "super boss" fights kinda creeped me out.

Honorable Mention to the last-ditch exosuit the Brain gets in Contra III.  That was a battle that went from oh-shit-oh-shit-oh-shit to YOU CHEESY SON OF A BITCH (throw controller) in 4 seconds.

No mention of psycho mantis?

Or the entire game of Shadow of the Colossus?

I restricted my list to final bosses, as such Psychomantis is excluded. And Ive never played Shadow of the Colossus, my PS2 is a JRPG player and nothing more  Tongue
[/quote]Shadow of the Colossus is fucking amazing.  It's beautiful and well designed, even if the last boss is a little lackluster compared to the others.  If nothing else at least rent the game, you'll be glad you did.

Re: Favorite/Best Boss Battles - Scary Womanizing Pig Mask - 09-02-2008

So many amazing fights, it's hard to pick which ones are my favorite!

Gigyas from Earthbound: I actually wrote an entire essay for my Destructoid cblog about the hugs amounts of symbolism and hidden messages in that fight. It's truly and amazing and terrifying experience.

Matt Engarde in Phoenix Wright: Justice for All: Not really a boss fight per-se, but taking down that bastard was incredibly satisfying, especially after he did his breakdown animation

The HIN-D in Metal Gear Solid: Something about taking down an attack helicopter single handedly is just really really cool. I liked the way you couldn't just take it head on, but had to hide behind shelter and take pot shots in the brief period when Liquid wasn't shooting you. Seems kind of a basic concept, but something about the way it's done works so well.

Liquid's Car Chase in Metal Gear Solid: The REX and fish fight were pretty amazing, but the fact that Liquid still lives despite the fact that he should have died way back when the HIN-D crashed just proves what a badass he is (seriously, Snake couldn't kill him even, he had to have Foxdie come save him, and even death couldn't stop him from getting his way!). Plus the image of Liquid driving the jeep one with hand with an assult rifle in the other is really pretty awesome Wink

Final boss of Mother 3: Not going to go in to details to avoid spoilers, but wow. Simply incredible.

So many more good ones though Tongue I'll have to add more later!

Yes! Big Grin

Also, since I'm thinking of MGS:
- The Boss, MGS3: The Boss is by far my favourite character in the MGS series, and one of my favourite female characters. The actual fight itself really wasn't anything memorable, but the whole buildup around it, and the epic finale really made it one for the ages.

Re: Favorite/Best Boss Battles - xlilkrissyx - 09-04-2008

definitely that stupid end boss from Shadow of the Colossus with the millions of layers that takes like 2 hours to get up. my friends and I just call him "Cakey".

Re: Favorite/Best Boss Battles - A. Crow - 09-05-2008

I'm trying to remember my favorite boss from any zelda game, and no, it's just not working.  Either I remember them for being overly annoying or don't remember them at all.

Can you really have awesome boss fights in turn based rpgs?  I mean, the story can be awesome, but that isn't really the fight.

I remember playing Turtles in Time for the first time and having to toss foot soldiers into the screen to beat shredder and his cheap ass laser chair thingy, I thought that was pretty awesome, but that's probably because I was 7.

I really want to bring WoW into this thread.

I see where you're coming from but I still say yes.  Although it is turn based most of the time doesn't make it any less epic.  Unlike in real time boss battles where (most of the time)  you can just find a pattern or use your reflexes to dodge boss attacks, RPG battles force you to think ahead and plan in order to beat a boss (most of the time).

it wasn't the boss fights that were hard, it was the entire fucking game.

Really, I spent way too much time playing battle toads when I was young, that much punishment isn't conducive to being well adjusted.

Re: Favorite/Best Boss Battles - HuckBerryGee - 09-07-2008

my favourite boss fight in a zelda game was twinrova in OoT those two witches that fusion that you had to beat with your mirror shield.

mgs1 psycho mantis
mgs4 final and also gear vs gear
I also enjoyed beating the crap out of bowser in super mario world
destroyman, bad girl and holly summers l and  in No More Heroes. god I liked the boss fights in that game

other than that there's none that strike me right now

as for stages, my favourite stage would probably be the Milkman Conspiracy as well as Lungfishopolis. craziest shit ever

I dunno. A lot of your posts are a lot more sensible and level-headed than a fair number of the other forumgoers, me included.

Are you sure you didn't just expend your entire lifetime's rage on Battletoads?

Well, I thought the glowy orb level where you run from him on a unicycle was pretty fucking sweet. :-\

Also, 'Snot a Problem from the original Earthworm Jim was an awesome boss level (I consider him a boss since he was the only enemy there). Big Grin

BOSS RUSH!

Speaking of which, I remember fondly the boss rush at the end of "Legend of the Mystical Ninja" leading up to that big guy riding the big fox.
