I have family in Seattle, and the thing about them that I seriously hated (besides being rich and having spoiled kids) was that they called it pop.  :Smile :Smile :Smile

In Canada we call them soft-drinks.

Or sweetened carbonated beverages.

Around where I live most people call it pop, and I actually got teased a bit about it by some Frag Dolls at E4All when I offered to get them drinks (it wasn't that creepy, we were talking and I helped them out with a few things Tongue).

Fucking eh! Milk in a bag! Big Grin

Re: Hey there.... never made one of these. - Luinbariel - 09-12-2008

I fucking HATED milk in bags.

It was only available in our area for a short time, because EVERY time you bought it it would be bad. EVERY SINGLE TIME it would already have gone off.

Also I always lol'd at the people who called it pop, but its just a personal choice I guess. I wonder if its regional?

Seems to be, but I always thought it was an east/west thing which it doesn't appear to be.

Nice map... wish there was one for Canada.

Re: Hey there.... never made one of these. - Neonie - 09-12-2008

That map also proves that the parishes (county's bleh) in Texas are retardedly small and grid based.

Also: Pop is a really odd term to refer to soft drinks as. As it has no association (in this day and age) with the actual soft drinks. I could see it being that way in the 1950's maybe when people referred to it as Soda-pop, but I would of thought that terminology would be long dead by now .

As long as someone keeps using it it won't die.

Surf's random fact of the day:

I'm late to this party but when I was in Business school one of our professors was telling us that they'd hire people, usually recent grads, to drive around the country and stop off at restaurants selling pepsi products and ask for a coke.  If they don't say "we carry pepsi products" they make a note and send it in to corporate.  This is because you can lose your trademark if it can be shown that your product name has become the common term for referring to products of that type.  Like RollerBlades, Band-Aids, Dumpsters, etc.  Those are all brand names believe it or not.  In the case of grads they'd offer them as a sort of proving ground or hazing before giving them a real job.

Yeah, I remember reading about bandaid nearly losing its trademark.

So is 'Soda' and 'Soft-Drinks'.
They contain neither soda, nor are soft.

Mind you, Sodium bicarbonate (ala Bicarbonate of Soda) was used to produce carbon-dioxide used to carbonate your 'Carbonated Beverage'.

Maybe they're soft ever since they removed the Cocaine and Lithium from hard-drinks?

Re: Hey there.... never made one of these. - cbre88x - 09-13-2008

The South calls it Coke because all the Coke bottling companies are based down here.

The ironic thing..JSU rid it's contract with Coke and made a new one with Pepsi. So now JSU is exclusively Pepsi. To put that in perspective for those not in the know..Jacksonville is a college in west Alabama...

Pisses me off though because we lost Orange Fanta..and gained both Sierra Mist and Mountain Dew...I want my damn Orange Fanta.

Re: Hey there.... never made one of these. - Geoff - 09-13-2008

I still call it pop. :o
