I think the real question is *why* people have been going to the cinema less, is it the quality of the film's story, the special effects, competing forms of entertainment, the price, or a lackluster "theater" experience?

In addition to all the reasons Caff cites, which I concur are all contributing factors, I would argue that there is another factor at play, possibly more powerful.

Why did people go to movies back in the day? Social networking.

How do people social network nowadays? Via multitasking. Pull out the phone. Hit pause on the DVR (Tivo, nacht). Alt-Tab. Apple-Tab. E-mail. Blackberry. Facebook. Steam-messages. Forums.

How often do any of us sit in one place, in complete silence, and do one task for 90 minutes, without interruption? I don't know about ya'll, but these days I get antsy after 30 minutes of doing one single thing.

The primary use of multitasking these days is to see whether other people want to talk to us, whether we are at work, at home, on the road, or out on the town. You can't pause the movie in the theater, and it is socially discouraged to whip out your iphone/etc. and check your messages in the middle of the movie.

I think, given the choice, the prime demographic of moviegoers would rather fill in a movie around their social life than fill in their social life around a movie (that sucks 90% of the time). There is an easy thesis to be had here.

They'll never see jail time.

Was anyone really surprised by the outcome? The laws bought by the RIAAQQ/MPAAQQ were vaguely enforced; Used in a manner to not quite mock justice(debatable) but satisfy people that felt slighted(not debatable).

Just like any internet argument, the instant the TPB lawyers starting using logic, they lost the fight.

Hey look, after 4 long months Neonie has made his triumphant return.

In case some of you don't remember Neonie, allow me to pirate some MPAA material (to stay on topic) to refresh your memory.

Re: Fuck - CaffeinePowered - 04-18-2009

I concur, what Rummy said is also a contributing factor, and to echo Kor and others, TBP is not going away, the second the lawsuit was brought the servers were relocated to another country.

So even if they do lose the appeals process and go to prison or something, they will not take down or stop the site in anyway.

Re: Fuck - sarcasticsteve - 04-18-2009

It seems Anon has begun its protesting of the verdict, there is a little thing going on where they want /b/ to start downloading a torrent of all the UK top singles from 1952-2007, then burning them to a spindle of cds and leaving the cds in public places with "From Anon & ThePirateBay.org" written on them in Sharpie.  TPB has actually come out saying they don't want that to happen, as it hurts their case.

Re: Fuck - [fr31ns]Karrde - 04-18-2009

I kinda feel that any company who completely fails to take adavntage of something (the internet) new deserves what happens to them.  Especially if they stonewall for years and actively try to force the old business model despite the reality.  I bet so many of these problems coulda been avoided if companies had started itunes type services way back in the 90s.  I like paying for quality stuff even though I could get it for free.  I mean hell, look at steam/impulse/etc.  I'd rather run stuff out of that than pirate it.  Just makes things easier.

Part of?  He's the fricken president.

Every time I hear about the RIAA getting some stupidly large amount in a lawsuit, I have the urge to commit felonies against them.  And not the run-of-the-mill felonies, the ones that the UN considers war crimes.  I know that's not exactly productive for conversation, since I think the general consensus here is the same.  Do we continue to take turns saying "fuck" ?
