My advice: get a good reliable car and some gas money, by hook or by crook. Live out of that. Shelters are a bitch.
Read Wikihow. It has a bunch of articles on good homelessness. Also, Steal This Book has some good (now mostly obsolete) tips, but you can still read the wiki.

A friend of mine was homeless for a while. He lived in an abandoned barn for a while and ended up riding a bicycle across the states over the course of a year or something of the sorts. If you aren't forced into the situation don't go looking for it. It really sounds like you just want to go backpacking like a dirty hippy.

Honestly, I can't stand filthiness, I'm terrified of bugs, I'm picky about what I eat, I'm skinny, I have no useful skills, and I'm a coward. This is a bad idea. But I still might do it. At the very least, I'm gonna try to save some money up and do it the smart way in a car like Peaches said.

I'm about to be homeless, housing is kicking me out today and my house isn't ready to be moved in..not to mention the original occupants haven't left. So tomorrow I am officially homeless. Time to go on the street corner and whore myself.
