Re: Can I upgrade my current processor to this one? - KarthXLR - 05-11-2009

Unless someone can convince me otherwise, I'm going to stick with getting the E7400 since it's the cheapest part on the menu that isn't crap. I don't have a lot of money, again.

Re: Can I upgrade my current processor to this one? - KarthXLR - 05-13-2009

My dad says that it might be my bus speed that's bottlenecking me, but I don't know how to find that or what is considered, "Good".

Re: Can I upgrade my current processor to this one? - KarthXLR - 05-13-2009

update: my bus speed is 200 mhz

Will this be ok if I go up to E7400?

Re: Can I upgrade my current processor to this one? - Blues - 05-14-2009

Front side bus should be 266MHz for a C2D processor, hit del as your comp is booting, and you'll be taken to your BIOS. From there, depending on the mobo, you should be able to find a section that contains your CPU multiplier, FSB controls, etc. Set to 266MHz and see whut happens.

Is it....safe?!

Yes. Just don't change your CPU multiplier/other shit (if you even have the option).

I can't seem to find it. When I hit delete, it gives me the option to choose an OS to start up, or to perform some sort of memory test.

I'll do some more scrounging around, but I'm having trouble.

Here's a decent guide

http://www.overclock.net/intel-cpus/1567-intel-overclocking-guide.html

Id recommend reading a few other guides to get a feel, overclocking can be tricky, you could also type specifically what kind of mobo into google and look for a good guide that way as well.

I think that my MB is an ASUS, but the problem is that I get to BIOS differently though. I'll have to dive a little deeper for this one.

Define differently?

By default it should be either Delete or one of the F-Keys

Do you have a custom build or some stock, IIRC some older stock and even current stock models try to make it difficult to access the bios for normal users

My Motherboard is just as store-bought as my processor is. The only things in my PC that are custom are my GPU, PSU, and RAM.

[/quote]It's typically either Del or F1 right when the computer starts up. While its POSTing (Power-On Self Test, the shit that shows up right after you power it on like scanning memory and checking your drives), it should display what key you need to press to enter setup.

It's F10 on this computer, and I can't access my BIOS anyway. This Board came with the computer, not custom, stock.

Mobos are cheap, get a new one.

if you got it built by dell or HP or something, you're not gonna be able to OC
if it's custom build you most likely will be able to.
didn't we already determine that you have an OEM build and you can't OC anything?
