Doesn't that mean we should start seeing some scholarship/support program love? Re: This Made My Day/Improved My Day Thread! - zaneyard - 02-15-2011 you guys are arguing about something that is completely retarded school should be a paid for government thing like other countries. What you were arguing over is whether society stacks the deck or whether its the individual's responsibility to rise out of it. IMO, neither end is 100% correct, and feel free to debate, but please keep the name calling to a minimum, k? :-* Oh, and cite sources :-* :-* Re: This Made My Day/Improved My Day Thread! - zaneyard - 02-15-2011 honestly diglett, it's free money and our educational system is stupidly expensive why are you so mad about someone getting a discount on schooling. "Reducing the deficit is difficult. Americans always want more government [programs] than they're willing to pay for." Punishing white people of 2011 for the sins of the white man in 1811 is stupid. Hell if you want to get personal, my family didn't even come to the United States until the 1920's. It's up to the individual to get their shit together and get educated. Now, I don't have any problem with private scholarships. They're private entities and they can discriminate any way they want. But if there was a scholarship aimed at white males, don't tell me the NAACP with Jesse and Al wouldn't be at the their doorstep with bullhorns and signs singing "we shall overcome". IMO, people of color lost the right to bitch about racism on November 4, 2008. If you want to reduce the cost of education to affordable levels, get rid of all financial aid. Costs would tumble once the artificial demand went away. (02-15-2011, 02:56 PM)at0m link Wrote: this reminds me of what someone in the CBO said today. "Reducing the deficit is difficult. Re: This Made My Day/Improved My Day Thread! - beep beep diglett - 02-15-2011 if you can present a reasonable, logically sound explanation as to how white people are "punished" by scholarship grants being given to minorities that would not otherwise be available, with citable evidence from legitimate sources, i will eat a (fruit) hat Re: This Made My Day/Improved My Day Thread! - Eightball - 02-15-2011 (02-15-2011, 03:59 PM)diglett link Wrote: if you can present a reasonable, logically sound explanation as to how white people are "punished" by scholarship grants being given to minorities that would not otherwise be available, with citable evidence from legitimate sources, i will eat a (fruit) hatA search for the article I'm thinking of came back empty-handed, but here's what I remember about it: For caucasian and asian students applying to universities (this is in Canada), it was found that they needed a higher GPA than students of other races to be admitted (across a sample of some public and private unis). Apparently it was because schools were trying to "diversify the student body" (as 90% of universities still are), and so would accept african-american/hispanic/native-american students with lower grades and test scores. As a result, caucasian and asian students were placed at a disadvantage in applying to schools simply because of their race. Although it doesn't speak to distribution of scholarships, it shows that there is some level of inequality in academia resulting from people paying more attention to race than merit. And Stein, remember that it's all just a giant bureaucracy. If they determine that you're eligible for the scholarship, then you're eligible for the scholarship. It's yours. Take it. Ok, so last night, my girlfriend and I fell asleep really late after watching Step Brothers while really baked...So I had to wake up for work, forgot to set my alarm, woke up around 7:40. I work at 8 am... I had 20 minutes.  I got in the shower, got to work only 5 mins late, and stayed there for 9 hours... I've been texting my gf all day, I called her around 9:30 to make sure she was awake because she has class today.  When I leave work at 5 pm, I take the bus home.  I walk from the bus stop, through the cold, and get to my condo. I unlock the door, kick my shoes off, and head downstairs... I open my room's door slightly, and see that my calendar, which was on another wall in the room earlier that morning, was now, to the left when you entered the room. "Weird" I thought. I swing the door open. Whoosh!  My bed is made, all my stuff is organized, two of my shirts folded on my chair, a bunch of stuff wiped off and dusted!. She even rolled me a big fat joint for when I got home...I had just taught her how to roll on St-Valentines, and she rolls really well!! Proud of her haha! I look at my keyboard, and I see my notebook, of which's pages are all pictures of walls instead of lines on a page.  There's a 2 page love letter written in red and it's the most amazing thing I've ever read!!! I'm so happy!! |
