Does anyone see anything wrong with Discovery Channel having a reality TV show about Sarah Palin?

Re: New/Improved Longest Thread - Didzo - 11-17-2010

Worth a read if you're bored. A guy who is paid money to help students cheat writes about what he does.

This was actually exceptionally interesting, and reminds me a lot of working with other students while at university. There were so many others who asked me to look at their papers and I just... I couldn't even read it. They'd gotten into third and fourth year courses in English and yet somehow they still couldn't write a damned essay... that always boggled me. The number of incoherent sentences and unfinished thoughts were amazing... and yet I was floored when they still passed the course with a pretty decent mark.

Maybe I should start writing for a company like that. :p

I am totally Ok with this. I have no patience for the stupid pre-requisite courses school force students to take just so they can bilk a couple extra thousand off of them. College is a total scam and I have no problems with scamming them right back.

Great read. I'm feeling a smug sense of self-satisfaction in knowing the system is crumbling. It'll take a couple decades, but intellectual dishonesty as a problem will burn itself out.

This also explains much to me. I wonder if academic dishonesty is as rampant in other areas of study (natural science, engineering, fine arts).

Great link; I got completely distracted from my O-Chem lecture.

It will always come back to bite you one way or another, either in upper level courses, or if you manage to get a degree in whatever your field of study is.

Except for this one time, two friends and I were taking a Japanese culture course, one of them and I studied pretty hard for the final, we both got low-90s for our percents. The third friend sat between us in the test and copied a lot of answers and got a higher score then either of us.  b)

I think it's naive to assume that intellectual dishonesty is something that will one day disappear.

[/quote]And foolish. All sticking your head in the sand accomplishes is an ever increasing difficulty level that becomes unsustainable without resorting to cheating. Anyone who's ever been in Engineering school can tell you this.

Re: New/Improved Longest Thread - Kor - 11-17-2010

Maybe I'm too much of a dreamer for you cynics Sad

The point is, the system promotes the dishonesty. We already see the effects of an educational system that fails to actually teach and simply rewards those who grades well. Look at it from another perspective: 150ish years ago, the Master/Apprentice methodology was the foremost method of learning anything. The apprentices of yesteryear who are Masters today are simply dying out, and their knowledge, insight, and the most tragic cases, their craft, are being lost forever. In that time, you simply couldn't cheat; the quality of your work spoke to your knowledge of the field.

Like I said, maybe a couple decades(read: Baby boomers die out) people that like to have bullshit shovelled down their throat won't be around. I firmly believe that if our generation maintains the innate bullshit-sense we have, there simply won't be room for it.

Additional food for thought: How many people do you know said they learned more about the field they went into then they ever did in college/university?

Edit: Albert's quote in my signature is very relevant here.

Re: New/Improved Longest Thread - Versus - 11-17-2010

our generation has an innate bullshit-sense? all i have to do is look at status updates on my facebook homepage, and...uh...

Re: New/Improved Longest Thread - Luinbariel - 11-17-2010

What pisses me off the most is that I had the skills to write my own papers, and to write them fairly well. I was good enough that, like that guy, other students noticed and asked me for help.

Yet, when they handed in their papers that were still quite honestly not all that great, they still get better marks more often than not.

Their papers are full of suggestions in red pen that literally would mean the paper itself failed to meet all specs, and yet they get the same grade as mine, which has minimal suggestions on it and even occasionally has a positive "I liked this" comment on it.

It's different; you live in Texas! Big Grin

As for the papers, Imma sound like a dick but a lot of the english majors in my fiction class are just horrible at writing and forming arguments in general. During a workshop we had I was proofreading people's thesis statements...many of which lacked a thesis statement. Stuff about how something basic is a theme in this book, or that one behavior is "bad" in another.

Then again, my view of English/literature/fine arts in general is kinda biased after all those times I'd spend <2 hours writing a paper and get an A, but spend days studying for a very simple exam and get a B. Meh?

EDIT: Doesn't help that my English TA semi-plagiarized my work earlier this quarter. Still upset about that.

That used to piss me off so much as well... Do next to no work on a paper and get a good grade, but study for an exam in something else and get a lesser grade.
