While my lovely guide offered rough estimates, I failed to detail the conditions which affect trading and the values I assigned. I just gave rough estimates of values with not much context, though I did separate it into sections. And I thought it was pretty clear that it was not meant to be definitive. Rough guidelines =/= a comprehensive guide.
However, I will attempt to sort some things out.
To trade without looking desperate or ignorant, you need to have a ballpark price you're looking for, but then be able to feel out what the other person wants. If you really want something (such as a specific hat or any hat if you don't have many to begin with), you can either set a lower base price to hopefully get more offers, or you can be patient and wait until you can negotiate a reasonable offer. Basically, you can either set a definite price that is designed to get you an offer fast (for example: trading one tag for one reclaimed), or wait until you see someone desperate for tags and then get 2 reclaimed out of them for it.
In this case, you're taking my estimated upper limit for a tag (when someone wants one pretty bad) and combining it with the lowest possible offer for a craftable hat (when someone wants metal pretty bad). The thing that makes your trade request a little far fetched is that you're taking two extremes and combining them. Also, people who really want tags usually already have whatever hats/items they want, so metal wouldn't interest them as much and they are less likely to trade away a hat. People like naming their hats because they are rare and some people are rather attached to them. People who want metal fast want a specific item, and they want it quick. They probably won't give a flying fuck about tags, paint, or the like until they get their hands on whatever they want to craft. Basically, you're taking two unlikely offers and turning them into what someone might construe as an exorbitant asking price.
The way to profit from trading is to make little profits at a time: sell a tag for a reclaimed and a scrap, buy one for two scrap or a handful of extra polycount items, and so forth. It takes time and some finesse, but it will leave both you and the people you are trading with happy, and no one will feel cheated. If someone wants to make a ridiculous offer, let them put it up for offer first, and make sure you give them plenty of time to think it over and back out. Many of the people who put up such offers simply don't care, but if it turns out someone did care and got confused or overeager in the trade, they can fuck over any potential trades you make in the server by complaining. It makes you look bad and feel bad.
I hope that clears up some confusion.
Of course, you could just add me on Steam and talk to me there if you want me to help you figure out how I go about trading just for the sake of getting more stuff I honestly don't need.
