Pokemon has never been just for kids. If you think it has you obviously missed some of the mini-comics that came with some of the pokemon merchandise (I believe it was the VHS tapes, someone correct me if i'm wrong) . But there was one particular Mini-Comic that was about a Dittio changing him self into Ashes form, hiding behind a bush, and watching Misty change (naked) into her cloths after taking a bath in a lake.  Misty spotted the Dittio and went to go bear the REAL Ash to a bloody pulp.

it was specificaly designed and marketed for kids, it just has some factors that appeal to some adults.

Yeah. It has a broad appeal, and certain aspects of it (like competitive battling and Pokemon Special) are clearly not not for kids, the most important parts are definitely geared towards them.
