But Hitler's position during WWII I feel is more directly related to the outcome of the conflict; it's hard to picture us up and leaving the Middle East just because Osama's dead, and what insurgents remain I doubt would be deterred by his death; he's now a martyr. But I see your point.

you do know the allied forces occupied germany for quite some time after Germany surrendered, right?

al qaida isn't a country, much less a country with much in common with the other western european countries around it
[/quote]

uh wut?

you do know we are referring to the occupation of Afghanistan and much of the middle east right? I don't know where you got me calling al-Qaeda a country from.

Re: Osama Bin Laden is dead - Versus - 05-02-2011

germany is a country, germany was occupied. germany was far more like the countries that occupied it than the countries that currently occupy some countries in the middle east.

al-qaeda is not a country, we cannot occupy it

it's different.

maybe i was reading too much into your statement, but i don't think osama, to the situation in the middle east, was functionally like hitler to WWII

alright let me break it down for you

al-Qaeda=Nazi Party
Afghanistan (the birthplace of al-Qaeda)= Germany
Hitler= Usama Bin Laden
Occupation of Afghanistan after war= Occupation of Germany after war

rough equalities. simply drawing parallels for a point. I don't feel like breaking down the Afghan-Soviet War.

Edit: Just read your edit. Probably. No Hitler is not functionally equal. I'm trying to prove a point in which Eightball was questioning how one man can make such a difference in which I pointed out Hitler.

"germany was far more like the countries that occupied it than the countries that currently occupy some countries in the middle east."

what in the hell does that have to do with anything? I'm literally sitting here trying to figure out the point you are trying to draw from this, but I can't because there is none to be found.

Alright since this hasn't been cleared up yet, let me try.

Versus is saying that terrorism != nazism, in the fact that terrorism works underground (al-queda) and nazism was the belief that the vast majority of Germans had during ww2. The citizens of Germany believed what Hitler was telling them, that's how he became so popular. Osama had a network to run terrorist acts, its not like everyone in afghanistan believed he was fighting the good fight. That's how they are different.

Re: Osama Bin Laden is dead - Versus - 05-02-2011

i think "rough" in "rough equalities" should be in red 1000pt impact, bolded, underlined, italicized, etc.

edit: i guess i hit reply before your edit. ok then.

As a practical matter, Bin Laden getting whacked doesn't change a whole lot. However, as a symbol, this is huge. The very poster child for Islamic terrorism just took a bullet to the head by the Red, White, and Blue. I think it will go a long way to bring the country back together. The United States is like a huge angry dysfunctional family. We may not get along, half time time we can stand each other. But if someone from outside the "family" messes with us, all the name calling, fist fighting, and hair pulling stops. After last week, the asshole who messed with the family got what was coming to him. It's natural that there's going to be some celebrating.

I just hope that a movement spawns from this to dismantle the police state that has risen since 9/11.

i don't think any of you liked him so stop arguing about it and deal with whatever shit the media puts on there, for fucks sake it probably wont get as much coverage as michael jacksons death did.

personally i think it's a good chance to make some sick memes and laugh about it for like a week

edit, because I'm sure it will be necessary: I support our troops all the way, my heart goes out to all my friends and family that are currently deployed. There's a difference between supporting troops, supporting a war, and supporting how a war is handled/funded. I would hope everyone understands the differences.

That said, this comic is outdated but funny. At this point, it really shouldn't read GOP so much as just USA:

As a practical matter I think the only thing that will change much is Obama's approval ratings, both short and long-term.

Honestly, I don't really like celebrating the death of anyone, no matter what they did or were a part of or what have you. The end of something they stood for/something people came to see them as, yes. But their actual death? I don't really feel comfortable with that.

Re: Osama Bin Laden is dead - Didzo - 05-02-2011

Another +1 for Luin.

Re: Osama Bin Laden is dead - rumsfald - 05-02-2011

I'll just leave this here.

And, while I'm glad such a hate-filled person as Osama can no longer work to attack innocent people, I'm very disappoint he wasn't taken out silently*. The first rule of Wetworks is you do not talk about Wetworks.

*(well, aside from a trial, but that wasn't in the cards)

Man, I leave for one day to work, and come back in the middle of a serious discussion. We need more blind patriotism up in here.

That's the thing. The govt. probably wants everyone to know we took him out. Be it for Obama's political rating/stature amongst the nations/proving points/ect. Why else would he make a big fucking announcement about it?

Now the real question for me is how Pakistan takes this news. The fact that we pulled a huge (in size) mission in their territory and it was made extremely public. Going to be an interesting month.
