Play online and get your ass kicked by the regulars in the server. Almost every one of us is leaps and bounds better than anyone you'll see in some random server, it's the best way to learn the game.
I can think of at least two people off the top of my head who a year ago I would laugh when I saw shooting at me and chase them incessantly because I knew it was an easy frag, one of them is now considered one of the top 2-3 spies on the server, and the other can put my in my place just as easy as I can him now.

Yeah, but I found that it's not all that great of practice (for me anyways) since I die before I can do anything worth while. Thaaat's pretty much what happened when I played on the brbu server one night with Kase. I have gotten a LOT of practice getting out of the base.
And so it's kinda discouraging and thus I haven't played TF2 in a while now xD

I started off here in the same boat as yours. It took some time but after awhile I started to get a little better and despite some initial frustrations I got better.
The community was the biggest draw I think. There is a really good bunch of folks on there and they open up pretty quick.
Ignore the likely comments about being a small boy if you use voice chat. It is either you are a small boy or OMG TITS.

You should play as one of my pocket medics. All you need to do is heal me and I will feed you sammiches when you get hurt. I will also yell at you whenever either of us dies, you don't pop an uber in time, heal anyone other than me for longer than five seconds, or just because I feel like it. give you helpful tips that will allow you to read the flow of the game, learn about different classes, become a pro medic in no time, and become better at TF2 as a whole.
Also, you should trade hats with me.
