I don't read books. I listen to their audio counterparts. Because I'm lazy. You have a problem with that?

The most recent one's that I have listened to are Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand and 1984 by George Orwell.

Also, all the Harry Potter books by J.K. Rowling as read by Stephen Fry. Awesome.

And His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman is another excellent collection of fantasy fiction.

My all time favorite however is Douglas Adams' Hitchhiker's Guide and Dirk Gently series. Best literature EVAR!

"Love in the Time of Cholera" (I had to look it up just for the last word, though I suspected it was "cholera").

The second one is probably "La Hojarasca", or "Leaf Storm" in English.

Nah, la Hojarasca is another book, it's great, but not as good as the other (maybe better than "Mis putas tristes")

Thank you Peaches

Man, these threads seem to be exploding with activity the day they're posted. It's crazy.

I read books fairly frequently. Up until just recently, I was carrying Life, the Universe, and Everything (because I had accidentally read the series out of order) and Tomorrow Bites (following my readthrough of Tomorrow Sucks) with me if I was ever sitting somewhere with nothing to do, but I left them out of my laptop bag for the trip to california to keep it light. <.<

Has anyone here read the Blue Nowhere?

Personally, I found the point of this book to be scarier than "1984".  A world where people are ignorant not because information is repressed, but because the people simply don't want it. But yeah, definitely a worthwhile read.

I just finished The Gun Seller by Hugh Laurie, which was really good. Before that, I read Raymond Chandler's The Lady in the Lake, which was also quite good.

I read both of these earlier this year, and I second the recommendations.  They're both very long, but totally worth it.

There is one series I'm surprised no one has mentioned called A Song of Fire and Ice by George RR Martin that is supposed to be getting an HBO series.  If you are a fan of adult fantasy it is absolutely incredible and very well written.  One of the very cool aspects of it is that it is completely unpredictable main characters will die, unexpected things happen, etc.  It seems he purposefully thinks what is the cliche thing to do in this situation and then does the opposite, and then when you get used to that and start to predict it he goes the cliche route to throw you off again.

This recommendation comes with a warning, it is an immense series and keeps getting bigger.  He sort of wrote himself into a corner by creating too many wonderful characters who tell parts of the story from their perspective.  On top of this it's written as a chronicle of events instead of a true story.  So it's more like a history of what happened to a group of people throughout their lives than a tangible obstacle that they must overcome and then the story is over.  Due to this he keeps breaking his book and page limits he's been setting for himself, and the next book was even supposed to take place during the same time frame as the last book but from the perspective of the characters he left out.  He's seems to be trying to figure out the next step for the series that keeps telling all the stories that the readers want to follow yet progress to the end of the series at a reasonable pace, and the next book keeps getting delayed.

Also does anyone know about the series they were supposed to do based on Diamond Age?

I haven't heard anything about that since it was announced but I guess the strike fucked a lot of shit up so hopefully it's just delayed. Ge-orge muthafucking Ca-looney.
