How much money does Maxis make off of Spore though for every sale though? I don't mind giving money to EA, but I wan Maxis to get most of it, since I'm rather fond of them.

Actually the game was really fucking easy to pirate.  Was as hard as mounting an iso and copying over the cracked .exe.  However if you're serious about the game, you should buy it simply because I think the online will be a lot of the appeal.  The game itself isn't that great, most of the interesting stuff seems to be in the creation elements, and that opens up a lot more with the internet portion.

I just got it to dick around with once and make my Krabba in it and be done.

Re: Spore - CaffeinePowered - 09-04-2008

One thing I forgot was that this is PC only, so Im going to have to make a tough choice of supporting EA, versus supporting the PC game industry and sending a message to publishers that you can make PC exclusives, and make them profitable without dumbing shit down and making console ports

Re: Spore - Mission Difficult - 09-04-2008

Isn't there a ds version?

yes.

and tis the definition of "dumbed down for consoles"

Effortless minigame.

Oh wait, it's considered worth 50 dollars.

Yes but its not a direct port to my knowledge, more of a 'lite' version. Which is the way things should be ported from PC to consoles if they are ported at all.

The problem IMO comes in the design process, if you design for consoles, you are constrained and end up cutting out ideas or some kinds of complexity. Then when you port it to a PC later, it never gets those things back. If you design for PCs first you get all those creative juices flowing and then later when you port to consoles you try to make the PC things "fit" as best as possible, or maybe cut them out then if they can't fit.

Reference Case in Point: Elder Scrolls III and IV vs I and II, Deus Ex 1 vs 2, Halo's original concept vs what actually got made, and soon to be, fallout 1 & 2 vs fallout 3

This is exactly the reason why I bought it... (BTW, EA says PC gaming is their biggest money maker)

if that's true i would attribute most of the money coming in from the sims, and the sims 2. which isn't quite the shining beacon of game development that i would want representing PC gaming. the basics of the game are consumerism, vanity, and completely lacks a plot

What better way to get a HUGE group of people to play it? Its got themes that everyone can relate to on some level. and its so easy that any tom dick or harry can play it. Instant monies.

Re: Spore - Tragic Hero - 09-05-2008

So whats the verdict on the game?  I've heard from some people here and some people on gamefaqs (I know, gamefaqs=lolz) that this game isn't the PC game juggernaut it was supposed to be.  So is Spore awesome or just "Ok"?

Re: Spore - Luinbariel - 09-05-2008

I still think its pretty awesome but I can see where others are coming from as well.

After playing it for a bit it gets a little bit tedious, all the making friends and taking over etc. Its also excessively cute, the violence is kinda cartoony. You get to feel a little like you're grinding, but thankfully the stages don't last too long; just when you think you're hitting your ' do the same fucking thing over and over' limit the next stage is there, and the gameplay changes somewhat.

I don't like the camera changes after the first and second stages, though. It gets a tad akward and I keep wanting to move the camera like in the Sims 2.

Etc. I'm sure I could find more nit-picks, but really? Its a fun game all the same and I still find myself giggling like a retard here and there.

Re: Spore - Squishy3 - 09-05-2008

My one complaint after getting to the Tribes stage: I RAN INTO GODDAMN FURBIES, I MADE THOSE BASTARDS EXTINCT.

Elderscrolls 3?  The Xbox version was developed after the PC version AFAIK and as such it was an increadibly deep and complex game for console standards (as they literally just copy+pasta'd the PC version to the xbox).

ES III is probably my weakest example, but its still slightly downhill from I and II Sad

Re: Spore - Versus - 09-05-2008

ROFL dave.
