The leveling system just makes sense.

I hope you don't mean the 'enemies level up with you' system, that was horrible... Nothing like being a high level character that still has trouble fighting wolves to break your immersion...

No I mean that each action gives you leveling points in the skill that effects that action.  Every RPG should do that instead of letting you arbitrarily spend points on things that have nothing to do with your play style.  It really makes sense from an immersive stand point, I mean if you do nothing but beat people with a club you should be really damn good at beating people with clubs.  It's your specialty, what you are known for.  When you walk into towns people should say hey that's the guy that beats people with clubs.  He's really good at it, because he does it so often.  Don't piss him off if he has a club nearby.  A sword maybe.  A staff even better.  Just run up and kick him in the nuts if he just has a staff.  Oh wait that could probably be used as a club in a pinch.

Use/Disuse systems can be both good and bad, I prefer being able to spend some kind of points in things, especially if I know Im going to need them at some point but can't just "level them". It wasn't so bad in oblivion, but in like Final Fantasy II it made me want to hit someone.

I hope I don't get yelled at but I really liked fables system.  Sure it wasn't nearly as deep but it combined both.

Re: Fallout 3 - Eschatos - 09-20-2008

I really liked Oblivion.  It had its issues but it was still really fun.  I didn't mind the sameness of environments at all.  It's one specific region, of course it's going to look similar everywhere.

Re: Fallout 3 - Mission Difficult - 09-20-2008

I'll be surprised if they have more than two people doing the voice acting for all the characters in the game.

Its not just that but all of the TOWNS were exactly the fucking same.

In fallout 2 for example you had

Arroyo - A small tribal village, this might be typical as humanity attempts to resettle areas after a nuclear war

Klamath - Had a wild west feel, there were lots of trappers that made their living off the mutated wildlife

The Den - Felt to me sort of like a miniture mos eisly, you have slavers, gambling, warring gangs and a twinge of tragedy

Redding - Gold Rush town, complete with ghost mine, prostitution, drug addictions, and double dealing mine owners - messing with this town can fuck up all the rest depending on how you try to play off allegiances

Maddoc - struggling farming town with weird neighbors, don't throw dynamite down the shitter, also you can marry the country girl of your dreams here

Gecko - a town of the dead sustained by a leaking nuclear reactor

Vault City - Sterile, elitist, and pristine, no matter what you do they'll look down on you, especially the bitch that runs it

New Reno - Warring mafia families, drugs, prostitution, and you caught in the middle, oh and you can be either a prize fighter or a porn star here

Broken Hills - Uranium mining and equality for all, a lot of racial tension between humans and mutants lies underneath the surface of this picture-esq town

New California Republic (NCR) - bringing order to the wasteland or brutally subjugating all those around them?

San Fransisco - Warring triads, a tramp super freighter, and a cult that believes taking a refurbished shuttle to space will bring them closer to god, you can join the Hubbologists by paying money (dig on scientology if you didn't get it)

The only thing that differentiated the towns in oblivion was the architecture

Also, one of them had snow.

But, seriously, the thing that bothered me the most about Oblivion was definitely the enemy leveling system.  It took absolutely all the fun out of exploration; no matter where you went, everything was at the appropriate difficulty for you.  I want a game where if someone warns me not to go up onto a mountain because the hideous ogres live there, there really will be hideous ogres that will kick my ass if I go up to early.  Conversely, if I come back later chock full o' power, I want to have the satisfaction of whupping those ogres at their own game.  If they are always level-adjusted to me for whenever I go there, that fun is gone.

I liked Fable too but it was just too damn short and too easy.  All you had to do was learn that "Slow Time" spell and just slash the hell out of people.

The guy who made it is psycho about game making.  It's been pretty much confirmed he tried to do way too much in one game and then the developers just couldnt pull it off in time so they threw together what they had to get it out the door.  The one good thing about sequels is that it allows them to incrementally add all the things in.  So I'm praying that Fable II will be awesome.  I already reserved it.

You're talking about Moylenux(spelling) right?  Yeah I know his reputation and I am excited to see how Fable 2 turns out.  Still not sure if I am going to buy it or save my money for future games.

Yea he's done a shit load of potentially brilliant games that have just missed it.  Black & White was great but it sort of became too much of a bitch with micromanaging and difficulty and stopped being fun.  He seems to be known for that.  He comes up with fantastic ideas and then screws something up in the process and makes a flawed masterpeice.

I liked Fable as well... at least it was more varied than Oblivion for the short while it lasted...
