Shattered pelves FTW.

Kinda on topic, if only because I didn't know where else to post it. My brother wants to play stuff on his computer and watch it on his HDTV in the next room. He linked me to this and asked my opinion but I've got no idea, although I'm guessing HP is gonna be over-priced.

That's just a media extender.
If you are looking to play downloaded videos onto a TV, just get an Xbox with XBMC or a Xbox 360 for highdef (not nearly as compatible as XBMC).

If you wanna play PC games on your HDTV, you need a DVI-to-HDMI cable.

How do the console and the PC talk to each other? And, given that he doesn't play games, is there a cheaper box that just does the media streaming?

With xbox 360, you have to enable media sharing in wmp and then sooner or later it will pick up the 360's signal for you to allow it to access shit.

Make sure you have an MPEG-2 codec installed.

You can get a used hacked xbox for under $60 and I just bought a new 360 Arcade for $150 cad.
