Re: X-COM: UFO Defense - Versus - 04-21-2009

MISSION: RIO DE JANEIRO TERROR SITE-2

Dave and Trace get Auto Cannons; copduck and Ianki get Heavy Cannons; Squishy gets a rocket launcher; everyone else gets a rifle.

It's the team's first Terror Site, in Rio de Janeiro, and it's at night...all three of those mean this is going to be an ugly battle.

Turn 1: Once again, Scotty is the first one off; unlike the other times, he doesn't get shot at immediately. He hops off and takes cover behind the transport's wheels before poking his head out. He immediately sees an alien and shoots at it with a burst, hitting it once. Luck is not on his side this time, though, and the alien fires back, killing Scotty. Spore is the next one off; he is shot at by the alien who killed Scotty, but the alien misses twice. Spore returns fire, killing the alien with a burst; he picks up an ammo clip from Scotty's body. Chronomaster and ainmosni head towards the north side of the small house near the landing site. copduck gets off and takes cover behind the fore wheels of the transport, while Dave investigates a small 2-story house to the south. Trace follows Dave to the southern house. Ianki gets off the transport and blows a hole in the wall of the northern house with his Heavy Cannon, which doesn't seem to have anyone in it. Squishy takes cover near the fore wheels with copduck, since he has a rocket launcher. Before leaving the transport, Karth takes a quick glance out the transport's cockpit window, spotting a large house to the southwest.

Turn 2: Two civilians leave the northern house, who knows what will happen to them...Chronomaster rounds the corner, and spots an alien in the northern house. He squeezes off two bursts, with a total of two hits on the alien, but the alien is still up. ainmosni comes around the corner with him and also fires two bursts, killing the alien and destroying various household objects, including what looked like a bunch of birthday presents or something. Ianki enters the northern house through a hole and confirms that the house is clear. Karth fires a burst into the fence surrounding the large southwest house, revealing the presence of an alien; it is no match for Dave, though, who kills it with an Autocannon burst. Dave spots another alien hiding near the bushes of the 2-story southeast house, but is out of time. Trace heads over, but can't get into a proper firing position. copduck runs over to help, and delivers a fatal shot with his Heavy Cannon, saving Dave's life. Spore heads into the small northern house with Ianki; Karth moves toward the large southwest house. Aliens' turn: a single alien is briefly spotted; several civilians spotted.

Turn 3: ainmosni, Chronomaster, and Ianki begin crossing the street, covered by Spore from the original northern house; Ianki blows a hole in the building across the street, revealing an alien and a civilian. Dave and copduck stack up against the door to the large southwest house, followed by Karth, Squishy, and Trace. Spore fires at the alien, missing the alien, but luckily also missing the civilian and his teammates.

Gonna finish up Terror Site-2 tomorrow at school. :O

Blaster Launcher is fun but can also be a pain.  Send the disc into an obstacle that you didn't plan on it to hit and BOOM a whole room can go up in flames, eliminating any precious tech or alloys.  Not to mention possible friendly fire.

Be very careful when using this weapon.

Re: X-COM: UFO Defense - Versus - 04-23-2009

damn, this is a long battle. on turn 10 right now.

Turn 4: Ianki fires twice with his Heavy Cannon, killing the northern alien with his second shot. ainmosni enters the house; the house is clear. Spore and Chronomaster quickly and safely cross the street. Dave takes a look outside the house's fence to search for any hidden aliens; finding none, he advances southwest and crouches behind some garbage cans. copduck enters the house, passing by a civilian and the staircase, and enters what is apparently a living room. It seems clear, but copduck spots a new type of alien, the Cyberdisk, through a window; he is low on time, so he darts behind a nearby wall. Now that the Cyberdisk has been spotted, Squishy, who is on the northeast side of the house, turns around and prepares to fire a rocket if the Cyberdisk moves into his view. Karth moves inside the house, followed by Trace.

Turn 5: Karth moves into the living room, and is shot at three times by the Cyberdisk; he takes one hit, but is still up. Karth turns, spots the Cyberdisk, and fires a burst, hitting it twice. copduck emerges from behind the wall, firing his Heavy Cannon twice; one shot destroys a wall, the second hits the Cyberdisk. Dave realizes his help is needed, and comes into the living room; even though his shot connects, the Cyberdisk is still alive. Squishy goes to the corner outside, and gets ready to blow the Cyberdisk away with his rocket launcher. From across the street, Ianki blows two holes in the fence; Spore, Chronomaster, and ainmosni all fire wild bursts from quite a distance, hitting the Cyberdisk a couple of times, but also hitting a civilian in the crossfire. Aliens' turn: the Cyberdisk floats up to the second floor, much to everyone's relief.

Turn 6: Squishy rounds the corner and fires a rocket, killing the Cyberdisk; it explodes, taking out some wall segments from all three floors. copduck blows a hole in a wall, revealing that a bedroom is clear. Karth and Trace head into the kitchen, don't spot anything, and lean against the kitchen door. Dave heads back outside to his post behind some garbage. ainmosni, across the street and near the northern end of the map, begins moving southwest to another house, where he is fired upon in the yard; unfazed, ainmosni crosses the yard and hugs the wall. Chronomaster crosses with him, but spots a Sectoid, the first type of alien encountered; they are somewhat short, stereotypical grey aliens. Chronomaster fires a single shot, but misses. Spore crosses the yard relatively uneventfully. Aliens' turn: a single shot is fired at ainmosni, but misses.

Turn 7: Spore enters the house, barely dodging an energy weapon from the Sectoid inside. He fires two bursts, hitting the alien with only one shot. Chronomaster takes careful aim and hits the Sectoid again, but is out of ammo, and unloads his clip. ainmosni fires two bursts, killing the alien and destroying some household appliances in the process. Now that that house is clear, Ianki takes cover behind a lightpost. Squishy reloads his rocket launcher and moves along the northwest side of the 3-story house. copduck blows yet another hole in the wall, this time in the southwest wall. Karth and Trace move out; Trace blows a hole in the fence of another house to the southwest, which Karth enters. He glimpses a Sectoid in the darkness, but he is out of TUs. Dave approaches Karth and Trace to provide backup. Aliens' turn: a Sectoid, hidden in the darkness, kills Karth.

Turn 8: Spore, ainmosni, and Chronomaster all take this chance to reload; Chronomaster heads down the street with Ianki, spotting a distant Cyberdisk. He fires a shot, but the Cyberdisk fires a burst back, killing Ianki with a wild shot. Now Spore, ainmosni, and Chronomaster are kind of fucked, since regular rifles do little if any damage to Cyberdisks. Squishy begins heading over there to help. copduck grabs a grenade from his belt, which he will throw at the fence segment a Sectoid was hiding behind. Dave is crouched next to the fence's hole, while Trace is next to copduck. Aliens' turn: the Cyberdisk shoots at Chronomaster, misses, and moves away.

Turn 9: ainmosni and Spore hide in the house, while Chronomaster makes a run for the house's door; right when he is about get inside, though, the Cyberdisk fires and kills him. Squishy is almost in view of the Cyberdisk, but decides to make a careful shot next turn instead of a wild one now. copduck primes the grenade and tosses it, with Trace and Dave watching. Aliens' turn: the Cyberdisk goes halfway across the street.

You're welcome Tongue

I actually own a copy of this game, the cd-rom version. It's a pain in the ass to get running on anything modern. I would buy it again if I was any good at it. I always got my ass kicked.

On a side note, I was actually watching some UFOs at work yesterday... they eventually were ID'd.... then some other stuff happened.

Re: X-COM: UFO Defense - Squishy3 - 04-23-2009

Weather balloons, right HeK?

Re: X-COM: UFO Defense - Eschatos - 04-23-2009

This game is fucking hard.  Also, it runs great on DOSBox. Just follow these instructions.

Re: X-COM: UFO Defense - Mission Difficult - 04-23-2009

I have the original CD lying around somewhere, bought it on steam because idk where it is. Copied the game folder over to my 'nix machine and ran it under DOSBox with no problems. Make sure you research medkits first and then make a bunch of them. They sell for almost double what it costs to make them.

Re: X-COM: UFO Defense - Versus - 04-24-2009

Turn 10: ainmosni peeks out the window, two shots from a Cyberdisk nearly hitting him. He returns inside. Squishy comes out from around the corner, spotting another Cyberdisk; he fires a rocket, completely destroying the second Cyberdisk; Squishy returns to cover. copduck loads his now-empty Heavy Cannon with HE ammo. Dave advances and takes cover behind another fence. Not much else happens. Aliens' turn: a Sectoid is spotted inside the small warehouse Squishy was hiding behind.

Turn 11: Squishy advances down the street, spotting the Cyberdisk and a Sectoid. Dave goes the warehouse's door and kills the Sectoid with a burst; Squishy hides behind a light post. copduck and Trace keep watching the house farthest to the southwest. Spore and ainmosni are still hiding in the house, since their rifles don't do shit against a Cyberdisk. Aliens' turn: Cyberdisk randomly moves around, accomplishing absolutely nothing.

Turn 12: copduck and Trace examine the house, but don't see anything through the windows. Squishy sees the Cyberdisk, aims, and destroys it with a rocket. Dave moves into the warehouse, making sure there aren't any Sectoids inside.

Turn 13: Dave confirms that the warehouse is clear; copduck turns around and sees a Sectoid inside, probably the final alien. copduck takes careful aim with his Heavy Cannon and annihilates the Sectoid with his HE ammo...but an odd purple blast misses copduck, indicating another alien is inside, and with a new type of weapon. Thinking the coast is clear, Spore and ainmosni begin heading southwest. Trace heads for the house's door, but sees a fourth Cyberdisk all the way to the west. With this new information, Squishy reloads his rocket and fires at the Cyberdisk, but the Cyberdisk is somehow still alive. The Cyberdisk returns fire, but misses; fortunately, Squishy still has enough time to get back to cover. Aliens' turn: an explosion centers around Trace, knocking him unconscious.

Turn 14: ainmosni fires two bursts and a snap shot, killing the Cyberdisk; this signals the end of the mission.

Aftermath:

For a terror site at night, the team did very well; there were four casualties, but they were lighter than expected. Two live aliens were captured, and the overall mission rating was “good”. Anyone who was formerly a rookie was now a squaddie.

Re: X-COM: UFO Defense - Eschatos - 04-24-2009

I think I'll try writing up one of my missions.

Re: X-COM: UFO Defense - Versus - 04-27-2009

From the journal of Versus:

March 1st, 1999:

More soldiers arrived today: Chooly, Surf, Negate, MissionD, Vlambo, and J-Master. Research on...something finished today, the popup didn't tell me what. Anyway, research began on Heavy Plasma Clip.

March 3rd, 1999:

10 engineers arrived today; they will manufacture Power Armor.

March 14th, 1999:

Living Quarters finished today; more scientists will be hired.

At about 2000 hours, HeK detected a large UFO right where Central America connects to South America; both INTERCEPTOR-1 and INTERCEPTOR-2, piloted by Socks, were sent after it. Soon afterwards, though, UFO-4 was lost on radar. Nevertheless, both ships headed toward its last known position...but it was futile, and the ships turned back.

March 17th, 1999:

Heavy Plasma research completed today; all of the scientists working on it turned to working on the ammo for it.

March 21st, 1999:

MISSION: BUENOS AIRES TERROR SITE-3

Spore, ainmosni, Dave, copduck, Trace, Negate, Squishy, and MissionD all have Power Armor; Chooly, Surf, and Vlambo have Personal Armor; J-Master is unarmored. This is the first mission where we can use plasma weapons, so all four Heavy Plasma guns have been assigned to ainmosni, Dave, Trace, and MissionD; Negate has a rocket launcher; copduck and Surf have Autocannons with plenty of HE ammo; Squishy, Vlambo, J-Master, Spore, and Chooly have rifles. MissionD and Trace have motion scanners; Trace and Dave each have a High Explosive satchel.

Back in South America, the team thinks they know what to expect. The mission taking place in the day time will make things dramatically easier...new toys and real armor also help.

Turn 1: J-Master is the first off; he walks about four steps left of the ramp and sees a new type of alien; this alien is purple with capes...apparently, it is a Floater. J-Master fires a burst, surprisingly killing it with one shot. There is a house immediately northwest of the transport, which seems to be at the south corner of the map. J-Master moves west along the fence. Spore and ainmosni leave the transport, heading northeast; there is a small park on the other side and some sort of building to the north. Chooly and Dave follow J-Master west along the fence. copduck, MissionD, and Trace decide to investigate the nearby house. Vlambo, Squishy, Spore, and ainmosni will form a squad to investigate the park across the street. Negate will remain somewhat close to the transport until his help is needed, since he is carrying the rocket launcher. Aliens' turn: various Floaters moved around and shot at people.

Turn 2: Spore fires two bursts at a Floater to the north, although it looks more like he's aiming 30 degrees left of the Floater. Squishy aims and takes a careful shot, killing the Floater. Vlambo, as the new cannon fodder, starts walking across the street before seeing a second Floater in the park. Vlambo hits the Floater once with a burst, but the Floater is still alive. ainmosni fires an aimed shot with his Heavy Plasma gun, killing the Floater. MissionD starts heading around the nearby house with a northern route, spotting a third Floater. Following ain's lead, he too downs the Floater with a single shot from his Heavy Plasma. copduck heads into the yard, but doesn't see anything else; Dave, J-Master and Chooly continue along the fence. Trace enters the first small room of the house, which is empty. Surf is apparently a weakling, since his Autocannon makes his TUs dramatically lower; therefore, he will guard Negate. Aliens' turn: a civilian screams and dies; a fourth type of alien is spotted.

Turn 3: MissionD continues walking around the house, making sure the bottom floor is clear; J-Master fires an aimed shot at the new alien, called Reapers, hitting it. Chooly fires four snap shots at the somewhat distant Reaper, but the Reaper is still up. Dave decides it's time to be a badass and kills the Reaper with a Heavy Plasma burst. copduck joins up with Dave's group. Vlambo continues his cannon fodder journey into the park, where he spots another Floater. Spore snipes the Floater from across the street with his rifle. Squishy starts heading northwest along the outside of the fence, spotting another Reaper. He fires a snap shot, which hits the Reaper but has little effect. ainmosni fires a burst at the Reaper: shot one destroys a door, shot two kills a civilian, shot three kills the Reaper. Trace heads to the third floor of a house. Aliens' turn: a third Reaper is spotted, much closer to Dave and company.

Turn 4: Trace confirms the house is clear after blowing a hole in a wall for no real reason. MissionD fires a burst into the fence in an attempt to aid Dave, but the Reaper is blocked by an obstacle. Dave fires a fatal shot into the Reaper and keeps moving northwest. copduck heads northeast a bit, but he sees a Floater when he has low TUs. Chooly moves into view of the Floater, but can't help copduck. Vlambo keeps moving into the park. Spore moves northwest, and is shot at by something, but is missed. Squishy follows Spore, and sees the Floater that shot at Spore; he kills it with a snap shot. Squishy starts moving across the street, and sees a Floater in midair near the park. ainmosni does some plasma sniping and kills the Floater. At the end of the turn, there are still two Floaters in sight; copduck better hope he gets lucky. Aliens' turn: one Floater kills Chooly with one shot, the other moves into the middle of the street.

Turn 5: copduck fires a burst at the Floater that killed Chooly, exploding the Floater with his HE rounds. Suddenly, Spore and Squishy can't hit shit, only hitting the Floater in the middle of the street two times out of 11 or so rounds fired at it. Even ainmosni hits it once, but the Floater is still alive. ainmosni fires a burst and finally kills it; that was one tough Floater. Dave and J-Master move northwest into a small shopping area. Vlambo looks around for a bit before seeing the Floater that shot at him; he has just enough time to get into some good cover. Trace moves into a sniping position from the house's third floor, fires a burst, and kills the Floater from a distance of probably 2/3 of the entire map, ending the scenario.

Aftermath: Only one X-COM operative was killed, Chooly. A total of 12 aliens were killed, and 9 civilians were saved. Overall rating was 455, “good!”

ainmosni, Dave – promoted to Sergeant
Trace – promoted to Captain

Everyone is now a Squaddie or higher, except for Surf and Negate.

March 23rd, 1999:

Another large UFO detected, this time very close to Vancouver. Tragic Hero and Socks were immediately dispatched. The UFO is heading west and is currently over the Pacific Ocean. UFO-5 outruns the INTERCEPTORs, and tracking is lost on it; Socks and Tragic Hero return to base.

Also, today, Vlambo and Surf were given Power Armor; J-Master is given Personal Armor.

March 28th, 1999:

A new soldier was hired.

March 31st, 1999:

George arrived today and was issued Personal Armor.

Monthly Report:

Monthly rating: -133 (OK)

Funding change: -82000

“Russia and Brazil are unhappy with your ability to deal with alien activity in their territory and have decided to reduce their funding.”

Russia I can understand, since we only have one base and it's in the US, but Brazil? X-COM dealt with a terror site near Brazil this month...
