i have an interview for a position at an insurance company tomorrow for a sales position that i'm assuming is going to be commission based.
i'm going to the interview just for the hell of it so i can get some practice and so i can wear my fly ass suit.

does commission work suck balls or is it worth maybe doing for some extra cash?

Just a warning, a suit might be nice but that doesn't necessarily mean it's the one you'd wear to an interview. I'd recommend a two button pin stripe in gray or blue. Just don't show up wearing a solid black 3 button suit (which is intended for formal evening affairs), you'll look a fool. (regurgitated from business school)

i got a 2 button black. It looks business like.

If Danny DeVito's character in Matilda inspired you, then commission based work might be for you.

Start ignoring what they have you regurgitating.

Suits, outside of the more standard colours/patterns(I'm looking at you Don Cherry) have no significant meanings. Wearing a suit is simply a reflection of the situation that you're in. Dressing up for interviews or dressing down for casual day to day, a suit, is still just a piece of clothing. You can present yourself dozens of ways in a suit, the most important idea behind it is that a suit emboldens you; you're invincible(from a fashion standpoint) while wearing it. No one's going to shittalk a guy in a smooth setup.

For the record, grey suits are better suited for the expanded wardrobe. All basic needs are covered with a blue or black suit.

Surprisingly still on topic: I worked for several years as a 'wardrobe consultant' selling suits and menswear, on commission. The biggest thing about commission sales is that you have to love what your selling, otherwise you'll never make it. I saw dozens of people cycle through when they found out that didn't give a single fuck about fabrics and weave patterns, suit cuts and colour matching. I did, and made a more than modest living on for a time.

Re: New/Improved Longest Thread - zaneyard - 10-26-2011

yeah he didn't expand on whether it was commission based or not, but i don't think the position is a fit for me. i'm not really a salesman. I can hardly go up to girls in bars and talk to them much less sell insurance.

that's alright though because i got an email and a phone call today for two more technical positions that i might be better suited for. and i'm still waiting for a call back from a third.

Re: New/Improved Longest Thread - rumsfald - 10-26-2011

Business clothing, like all social conventions, is highly contextualized. For example, in Milddle-eastern cultures, the norm is to lead with dark or black suits.

For a midwestern USA corp in a conservative field like insurance, you want to dress for what they want, which, if it involves selling overpriced-un-needed insurace to dying seniors, a dark suit and conservative shirt/tie would convey gravitas. In silicon valley? you better make sure your jeans have sufficient holes and rips in them.

And, yes, to do commissions-based work you have to love what you sell. You can't half-ass it.

On an unrelated note, just spent the last hour or so working on a pretty serious contingency plan for our house in the case of a nuclear strike/apocalypse.
If we do have to in act it, hopefully all 6 of us are here, as 5 minutes is not a lot to work with.

Re: New/Improved Longest Thread - Didzo - 10-31-2011

So for the first time in my life I saw a chick who actually looked good with her hair almost completely buzzed off.

I have to give credit to any girl crazy/brave/confident enough to do something like that to her hair.

How far into it are you? And what kind of engineering?

[/quote]Depends on your specialization. Transpo can involve quite a bit of field work, but its almost impossible to get a job doing it at the moment. Geotech too, probably because both are primarily employed by government organizations. No matter what you decide, make sure you study for and take the PE exam (or whatever your state's certification exam is called) as soon as humanly possible. This coming from someone who dated a Structural for a long time, and lived with a Transpo Wink

As far as your initial post, all engineers I've talked (including myself) to have had that identity crisis moment, got through it, and then decided to continue engineering. Its like a rite of passage.
