Re: Dota 2 - zaneyard - 11-09-2012

dota 2 will easily become the major competitive game of the western world with the direction and focus that valve is taking it.

That sentence was poorly formed. What exactly is League "more relevant" to? Certainly not the competitive scene.

While I can agree that the depth of personal play is still there in DoTA, the decision to simply port all the same champs was not a compelling reason to play one over another. I saw a couple guys wanting to try it not even knowing if they've dabbled with LoL, figured I might save them some grief from being decimated while learning.

Why is it a bad thing that they're porting over old heroes rather than creating all new ones?  There's a huge variety of abilities and gameplay styles in the ones that exist now.  I honestly don't get how that's a failure on the part of the developers.  Good heroes are good heroes whether they're five years or one day old.

WELCOME TO BETA, where valve and icefrog want to have the competitive scene explode as quickly as possible while they continue working on it, which means establishing parity with WC3 first so that those teams can easily transition from one game to the other without that much of a problem. the only problem is, for competitive games at least, is not all heroes are in the pool yet, and therefore some strategies in captain's mode are pretty much the metagame of the tournament (ex. AM was a carry seen nearly all the time in TI1, naga siren banned in TI2 most of the time, Tiny+Wisp combo respected in that tourney as well because of recent buffs before it)

it's not like they're going to be like "okay guys, we're done with porting all the heroes. we're good, stop here, that's all we need to do". dota has lasted so long in part due to its diverse hero pools, and the new heroes that come out every few months. trying them out, figuring out what items work well, etc. is part of what makes people keep coming back once they've played more than 10 games. now that there's a new engine, and especially with it being Source, there's so much stuff that they can work with that wont be held back by the restraints of the WC3 engine. i mean like, you play WoW, so i'm going to assume the only reason you buy expansions is because there's new content in it that you cant wait to try out because it adds to the game - thats just how i feel about dota 2, and im pissing myself in excitement to see just exactly what will happen once everything is good to go for that stage of development (which im assuming is release); it isnt going to be now, because of the competitive scene

yes, the community is pretty fucking bad. thats a complaint that can nearly be attributed to all multiplayer games other than runescape if you really want to delve that deep for some proof. there's not going to be a game where its community will be the community that every other game's player base will look up to. so that argument i find pretty much find moot, because its just an excuse to not taking the next step and actually PLAYING the game, instead of just playing the game

also i have no idea where you heard it was only going to be dota 1 with new engines. pendragon whispering in your ear? (history shows he's a cunt)

also dont think that im trying to attack you for anything, it just seems that there's been a game of telephone in which information has been passed on, but rather horribly

Re: Dota 2 - Vongore - 11-09-2012

Who wants me on their team? I suck, ruin your team battles and use the ultimate on random minions just because it looks cool.

(Seriously, i suck at this game)

Re: Dota 2 - zaneyard - 11-09-2012

Only one way to learn though bro. Do you get latency issues playing on US servers?

Re: Dota 2 - Coppanuva - 11-20-2012

So Eschatos was mentioning in IRC that we may have enough people to run a brb.u match now here. Anybody interested? I also have 2 gift copies I just got if someone wants to try to jump in.

Re: Dota 2 - If-I-Die-Its-Lag - 11-20-2012

Well, if it means less stress, then sure.

I figure we got a pretty big skill disparity but us pros can random or something to make it more fair.  Who all would be interested in non-serious dota shenanigans?

Or we can just divide up the pros and have them captain the newbies.

Re: Dota 2 - Trace - 11-21-2012

Re: Dota 2 - Eschatos - 11-21-2012

Well that's 5 people who have specifically expressed interest so far, and I'm sure there are plenty of others who would be willing to come play.  How does sometime this Sunday sound to yall?

Depends on when I get back. We can also restrict good players to a certain hero pool - like supports.
