I think this question is open to debate. compare with: https://www.hackerschool.com/ In unrelated/related news, when it comes to paying academic publishers Harvard waves the white flag http://isites.harvard.edu/icb/icb.do?keyword=k77982&tabgroupid=icb.tabgroup143448 Re: New/Improved Longest Thread - Surf314 - 04-24-2012 (04-24-2012, 11:10 AM)LT Crow link Wrote:
Yes, they are. When a department no longer exists, that constitutes "getting rid of it" (04-24-2012, 10:16 AM)Surf314 link Wrote: just gutting it and taking away all the research and crap. That crap is what attracts decent professors. Rolling computer science into other departments will happens like this: you'll have a little bit of Java, and some procedural programming in the physics and/or math departments. I've been subjected to that, I already knew Java before taking the computational physics class, they managed to make me unlearn most of Java, it was an absolutely horrible class. The super low level intro to office, database (MS access) and "web development" (LOL 2 credit hours of Html) will be moved to the business school, except when they dropped the graduate program in CS, there is now no one left to teach it. Roll some graphic design stuff in to Fine Arts, which will subtly shift from "how to create in this design suite" to "that's solid design but it doesn't twang my artistic string, F" -they're taking the instruction of computer science out of the hands of computer scientists. Which while completely screwing the CS majors (I mean, really, what are these guys going to do?), also screws the rest of the school who relies on that department for subject matter expertise. I'm not saying I approve of what they are doing, I'm just saying the Forbes article is misleading. It's bad, but bad in a different way then described. Anyways, one of my friends has a theory that this was a political play to gain support for more funding. If that is the case, it may be successful. It isn't just the colleges that are suffering, and the kids will not be alright.
The president of UF just sent everyone an email saying that CISE isn't actually getting cut and they're working on a new plan. Here's the interesting part from the email: "Some have suggested that the university use its "unrestricted assets" or "reserves" to cover the reductions. That is not a viable option for the University of Florida. We spent nearly $30 million of reserves last year to avoid having to make difficult budget decisions. We were optimistic in an economic recovery that would stave off reductions this year. Unfortunately, we are facing even larger cuts now because we failed to make needed budget adjustments then. At the same time, a severe backlog of facilities maintenance caused by the elimination of state support has the university on the precipice of crisis. We must maintain sufficient reserves to manage unexpected expenses associated with air conditioning system failures, roof leaks or other major outages that could put buildings out of commission and cost millions of dollars. Additional budget reduction proposals are expected to be brought forth in other colleges in coming weeks. I know finding the necessary savings after years of budget cutting will be difficult." Re: New/Improved Longest Thread - Dr. Zaius - 04-26-2012 I hate the websites that do nothing but compile questions/queries (such as 'lg env3 camera start error') and make it to the top pages on google without actually offering any fucking help. As a matter of fact, I hate a lot of websites.
Shit sucks. I hope they keep up the quality of the well regarded colleges though. I know the law school could rise in rankings and our med school is pretty top notch. I've also heard that the engineering school is pretty well regarded, I know all my friends from there got really good jobs. I can't imagine keeping that reputation with CISE. Re: New/Improved Longest Thread - Eschatos - 04-27-2012 I would expect they'll end up splitting costs across all of engineering. Right now it looks like I'll be switching to Information Sciences with the Business college.
