Re: New/Improved Longest Thread - StolenToast - 08-17-2012 The whole point of the declaration was that when a people think that their government is ruling unfairly and unjustly that they should be able to throw them off and adopt a new system. Hopefully people will remember that. Re: New/Improved Longest Thread - Versus - 08-17-2012 lol that went well last time in the US Re: New/Improved Longest Thread - Dtrain323i - 08-17-2012 (08-16-2012, 10:05 PM)Azure_Angel link Wrote:
Honestly, it's terrifying.
Understandable. However, positing putting down a dictator because he's crazy, and being crazy enough to shoot up a movie theater or a temple are two pretty disparate categories in my eyes. And lumping a friend who has libertarian views on politics and gun control in with said crazy shooter is also pretty bogus. The dbag that shot up the temple was too dumb to know the difference between Sikhs and Muslims, to boot. It was pretty depressing that the media had to keep pointing out that they were two separate religions. Re: New/Improved Longest Thread - Saxxy - 08-17-2012 the link zaius posted is a press release from "usenetreviewz" and "vpnreviewz". This was not written by a journalist, it was written by a marketer. Regarding the actual executive order, which was issued more than a month ago: there's one section, 5.2 (a), which was the main point of contention (the EFF), source of confusion (conspiracy theorists), or propaganda fuel (Russia Today) Quote:The Secretary of Homeland Security shall: (a) oversee the development, testing, implementation, and sustainment of NS/EP communications, including: communications that support Continuity of Government; Federal, State, local, territorial, and tribal emergency preparedness and response communications; non-military executive branch communications systems; critical infrastructure protection networks; and non-military communications networks, particularly with respect to prioritization and restorationNS/EP stands for National Security and Emergency Preparedness After some searching I only found a few commentaries/reporting on this that weren't propaganda pieces or hysterical fear mongering based on the propaganda pieces (did you know that fear mongering is a great way to drive page views, therby increasing ad revenue? It's true!). The purpose of this order is clarifying what the various departments of the government are supposed to do in the event of an emergency that disrupts/threatens the U.S. communication network, such as a major disaster or cyber attack. Even the 5.2 section isn't particularly exciting. If a major disruption occurs to the communications network of the U.S., then the government is probably gonna want to have a plan for restoring it, that's a no-brainer. Stuff like SOPA and its ilk are dangerous, but not some run of the mill executive order like this one. I really hope it didn't come across that way. It was pretty depressing that the media had to keep pointing out that they were two separate religions. That is depressing to no end, and knowing that a lot of people share that same problem is even worse. They may not shoot up a temple, but the impact they have on politicians is even more pervasive.
