that just opens it up to griefing. duck is on the other team and shoots me. i stand next to a bunch of people i dont like.

How about we leave it up to Valve to decide which weapon is best for the Sniper?


But, you guys whined about the Sandman...
So whine about whatever comes out for the Sniper. Jeez.

Sandman is bad, B-A-D bad. It's the first weapon to have a server mod plugin coded to remove it from the game, I think that indicates what people think about it pretty well.

The only idea I could ever come up with was some kind of moonraker style laser rifle.  Mechanic is opposite of the current one.  Zero damage ramp up time, but it has a cool down, limiting the number of shots you can take in a particular space of time.  Ergo quick scope HS are deadly as hell, but you can only get so many.

I'm thinking a sniper unlock that has a clip (no reloading durings shots) but has recoil after everyshot. Only problem is that sounds rather boring compared to the other primary unlocks, but I'll figure that out later. Next, judging by how different the secondary unlock usually is, I'm guessing that's where his Jarate should come in. Rather a jar of urine than an smg anyday, right? Then for the melee. I like the idea of a boomerang. Say, primary fire is a normal swing, but secondary throws it to a medium range and then returns in a classic Zelda fashion (aka: goes through walls). To balance it out though, it either doesn't crit or isn't as powerful.

Edit: Yea, I know the Jarate was a joke, but I wouldn't be suprised if they threw it in after what they did with the scout's secondary unlock.

I guess the big question is how do they want to evolve the class?  The updates all seem to try to expand the roles of a class, some with more success than others.  If they want the sniper to be a more forward character they will give him a rifle since no class currently has an all-range weapon with 100% accuracy this would work really well.  They'd obviously have to give the damage a big nerf but it would make the sniper play more interesting. 

Now if they wanted him to remain a specific goal oriented character but in a different area they could do things like suggested, a tag to call out other teams snipers.  Maybe something for counter-sniping where you can hit people with a dart that throws off aim.  Or poison darts that would throw off aim and give a small health degeneration.  If they wanted to make him more defensive they could give him a weapon with little health damage but would make people drop the intel and not be able to carry it for 10 sec, or the same with capping points or pushing carts.

So the big question is: What new role do they want the sniper to play?

New weapon, has 5 ammo and does 0 damage but increases you score by one each time you fire.  Also includes new taunts bragging about you carrying the team.

That's the one downside to your suggestions Blues (I like the handcannon and jar of urine ideas Big Grin). A good sniper destroying people is almost as frustrating as demos sticky camping. Only almost though, because at least you gotta appreciate the skill the sniper has. Wink

Auto sniper than can charge to 33-50% max? With a wicked kickback? So you stay scoped, but can't charge fully and still have to realign after a shot.

New rifle can tag players.  Basically if the sniper hits an enemy it allows your entire team to see a white outline of the character through walls so you can see the class and relative position.  This effect wears of after a certain amount of time (maybe 10-30 seconds, just see how it balances out).  The tradeoff is the rifle can't charge meaning you can only do base damage body shots and base damage head shots.  This gives the sniper a more involved roll in the team which as always been his main problem imo.

Oh shit, that would be awesome. Don't even make it do damage, so the person doesn't even know they've been tagged, and make the effect last until death or they go back to a resupply. Big Grin

Yeah I know eh? I mean, there's certainly no ways to grief your own team in in the game already, or to inform the other team of their location.
