Re: Gustav ??? - Fail Medic - 08-31-2008

Hey, y'all.  I have officially evacuated the mobile home.  However, my Mom and I deliberated and we decided we would stay in the area at a friend's house.  I have other family south of us in Iberia parish (lol, parish), and they say they're safe down there (they didn't leave  :o), but pfft, I'm far more worried about them than us.

We expect hurricane conditions where I am around this time (21:00 ~ 23:00 UTC) tomorrow evening, so power will go out at some point around then.  We've plenty of food, water, a sturdy structure, and all our important things like pets, documents, and other "like to save" objects like my PC (yes, Caff, including its volomunous cache of porn).

We're expecting to encounter at most high category 1 or low category 2 winds (about 90 - 100 MPH winds) which may strip some shingles from the roof.  Our mobile home may not fare as well, but it is buffered by several others (not that I'm wishin' "TAKE THE BRUNT, YOU FOOLS!" on them), and the expected wind direction may be kind to us.

Wait-and-see is now in effect.  We're sick of watching the weather.  The others have chosen to watch "Diary of a Mad Black Woman," and as derelict as I've been in scratching that off my must-watch list, I decided instead to drop this note.

Oh, we have a Whataburger in town.  It has a fireplace.  A goddamn fireplace.  It is the nicest burger eatery I've ever patronized.  I do prefer Burger King's flame broil, but Whataburger is worthy.  As far as evacuations have gone, I've heard that they stopped contraflow on the local interstates far earlier than expected because the volume didn't warrant it.  Not because no one's leaving, but because everyone's done gone.  About a million people from the coast on up has departed for points north and wherever.  But, meh, yeah, I do remember the Katrina exodus and the trouble it brought with it, and I just hope everyone keeps cool this time.

Anyway, that's enough gabbing out of me.  Thanks for the urges and well wishes.  Later!

Re: Gustav ??? - Luinbariel - 08-31-2008

Good luck all over again, thanks for giving us an update!

Re: Gustav ??? - Surf314 - 08-31-2008

Cat 1 or 2 isn't so bad, I went through like 3 of em in a row couple years ago.  Good luck all the same and be safe.

Re: Gustav ??? - Greatbacon - 08-31-2008

Stay safe, good luck, don't get dead.

Wow, this is pretty much exactly what my brother is going through as well. I think he's gonna stick it out at school or with school mates or something like that (Northwestern State University), and apparently his professor informed all who are staying to "bring your own beverages." Also, he's abandoning my folks' trailer to run and hide, but I don't think he's got the space to bother saving the important stuff should he actually get hit.  :'(

Three Drunk Guys and a hurricane

Edit: ah fuck, looks like the canjuns can't hold their booze past 11, they might be calling it a night. To be expected, but weak.

Re: Gustav ??? - KarthXLR - 09-01-2008

Be Safe Fail.

We already almost lost you once.

Let's not have that happen again mmmmmk?

Re: Gustav ??? - Fail Medic - 09-01-2008

zomg youtube.  I discovered the hand-me-down digital camera a friend gave me takes decent yet shaky video.

Click here for a boring clip!

I've also taken several pictures.  I may be posting before-and-after images from my area if they're interesting enough.

Here's one of some benign Gustav clouds yesterday.

Oh neat, thanks for the video!

Re: Gustav ??? - CaffeinePowered - 09-01-2008

Another question to ponder this time, who is Kanye West going to blame?

Re: Gustav ??? - cbre88x - 09-01-2008

This one may be fairly weak, but there are two more on the way..the next one projected to hit Georgia's east coast.

Re: Gustav ??? - dapngwnman - 09-01-2008

Fail, can you be like one of those crazy hurricane weather reporters and travel across the south making videos? PLZ?

Re: Gustav ??? - Vandamguy - 09-01-2008

i was just thinking CNN should get wise and put a nice camera into a plexiglass dome that's been bolted to the ground , and just let it record whatever happens.

fail , you can steal that idea if you want
