ainmosni and I are arguing over what classes we each get to be. He's being a wiener and saying we can't both be Sith because it will be "unbalanced". BUT I WANNA BE A SITH!

Someone slap him with a large trout, seriously.

If you are both sith, than we will simply have to find a way to unbalance you.

No, you play whatever faction is the UNDERDOG, whether that be republic or sith, you should always play the faction that is "underpowered and under populated"

In the long run you get more bonuses, buffs, and greater satisfaction.

I would know, I spent 6 years on and off playing the common pool sovereignty

I'd be willing to bet a lot of money that Sith are going to outpop Republic by a lot, at least at first.

not sure if people have seen these, but they are narrated gameplay videos... game looks absolutely sick.

I applied for the beta, but knowing my history of "how I got into betas", I won't get into shit, and maybe like a month before the game comes out...then I'll get in

Re: Star Wars: The Old Republic MMO - Evil Cheese - 10-07-2009

If I end up buying this game I'll probably go Jedi for my first character. Sure Sith are badass, but who didn't dream of being a Jedi when they were a kid? Plus Jedi seem more likely to be a tank class and I like playing tank.

I just hope they learn lessons from SwG, not everyone on either side is going to be a jedi...they might want to be though.

In the initial release of SwG, any character you generated had a slight chance of being flagged as "force sensitive", but you wouldn't know it until you did this elaborate side quest, if you completed it, you got one of two rewards, the reward being the awakening of your force powers and the ability to unlock a whole new tree of jedi stuff or some consolation prize if you were not force sensitive.

Well...this angered some people, much like the 'random hat drops' in TF2, you had no way of knowing if the character you made was force sensitive and I believe the rate was something ridiculously low like 1 - 3% of all characters generated, and even then you would have to invest a lot of time to level up enough to do the side quest to find out.

Well after much bitching by different sides of the player base SOE completely re-did the game system, eliminated a ton of jobs and specializations and made it so you could just be a jedi with a click of the button, and it completely ruined the game, and its the failure of SwG that is the reason Lucas Arts did not go back to SOE to make another star wars MMO.

Each side has its merits, but I'd prefer to see a light/dark jedi be something of a rarity, which would stay more true to Star Wars as a whole. Jedi are not a dime a dozen, force sensitivity is extremely rare, and being able to utilize that ability even rarer still. If they are going to have factional fights similar to WAR or DaoC, Id much rather see in say a 100 person fight, only 5 or 6 people actually light up sabers, at the most.

I agree with everything Caff said, though I am not going to quote it because I am a rebel.

Re: Star Wars: The Old Republic MMO - Luinbariel - 10-07-2009

From what I gathered about the Old Republic, Jedi were much more common than they ever were in the series commonly known to the public. I would not be at all surprised to see more Jedi in this game than usual.

Doesn't negate the things said about avoiding the large and popular groups though. Just sayin'.

Re: Star Wars: The Old Republic MMO - SAVAGE-0 - 10-07-2009

from my take of what they've done is completely ignored what caf said... about limiting anything... the only limit on jedi is the fact that any group in a MMO can not come close to succeeding with an all tank group.  They made Jedi/Sith the "Tank" warrior melee class.  every group will have 1 or 2, but any more and it will be a waste of space needed for healers and dps machines.

for those that play wow/eq - you know theres only 1 maybe 2 tanks per group - sometimes even per raid... so in a numbers game a well optimized group will have 16-25 people and maybe 5 jedi/sith

just a guess...

That depends on what MMO you model it after, WoW is completely different from SwG, which is completely different from FFXI, which is completely different from DaoC, etc, etc.

Sure, some of the base job types might be the same, tank, warrior, DPS Mage, Healer, etc. but it also depends on what the focus of your end game is. In WoW its a massive raid against a boss where everyone has specialized roles to play, in SwG its a mix of individualistic and group based economic things with some boss fights thrown in.

FFXI its small groups going through hard dungeons/bosses, and in DaoC or War its PvP realm vs realm combat.

Re: Star Wars: The Old Republic MMO - Eschatos - 10-07-2009

How would a jedi not be a DPS machine?  They have a sword that can decapitate anyone in one hit.  I'm with Caff on the rare jedi idea.  I'd much it be based on shooty stuff. Then I can see how well a jedi can dodge fire from 50 people shooting from all directions.

matrix - dodge this

Re: Star Wars: The Old Republic MMO - Luinbariel - 10-07-2009

Rare jedi idea is better in game, all I'm saying is that traditionally they were far less rare at that time in story.

Re: Star Wars: The Old Republic MMO - ainmosni - 10-08-2009

It really depends on how they implement it... From everything I've seen so far it's going to be a bioware RPG which happens to be multiplayer. They did work on multiplayer dialogue systems and such. Imagine playing KoTOR with your party comprising of PCs instead of NPCs. They didn't touch on raiding or anything yet so we'll have to see about that.

Further more, like Luin said, Jedi/Sith were a lot more common in the time period this game is supposed to be in so world wise there can be a lot. They made being a sith warrior a regular class in the game so there is a big chance they'll do the same with the jedi. I'm curious what other classes they will add though... that could change a lot. Maybe they'll add a second force sensitive class to the sith. (with a different role than the warrior)

Of course it all depends on how they set it all up and this is the game I'm looking forward to the most for next year. Maybe I'll get in the beta, that would give me a nice preview.
