Oh, and if we had turned it on my mother and I would probably have been killed by Carbon Monoxide, apparently.  For whatever reason that didn't scare me, and the fact that it didn't has now freaked me out.

you should pick up a carbon monoxide detector as well.

Yeah, get a few. Have one near the bedrooms and another near the furnace/boiler.
Kiddie makes a nice one with a digital readout and a built-in battery backup.
