Re: The Legend of Korra - EarthlingJohn - 06-25-2012

Late to post about it...

But damn. I screamed out at the tv at the end. That was just amazing.

The scene where
Amon dies with Tarlok... Jesus... That scene is so deep and depressing. Beautifully done. Just beautiful.
But the question remains; where do they go from here?

That is the summary of my issues with how they ended the season.
This last episode presented a good number of issues and challenges; an escaped villain, Korra with the loss of her abilities save for her new found air-bending and countless benders disabled. This could amount to several episodes of just coming to terms of the situation and Korra exploring air bending. Instead they wrap up the episode in minutes to create a mostly 'happy ending'. There was no challenge for Korra to revive her abilities, no real grieving. I didn't have time to connect emotionally with her character.

I, personally, would have preferred an 'empire ending'. Let me put on my Ridley Scott editors hat:
Amon has just taken away Korras bending and has her and Mako cornered in the hallway. Korra, at the extreme of fear and desperation summons a single powerful blast of air which blows Amon out the window and into the bay. This is without the eye-glowing and the 'I know kung-fu air-bending'. Change scene to a hospital, where experienced water benders are trying in vain to heal the abilities of the fallen benders, avatar included. Korra rushes outside, Mako following her. She pushes him away and runs to be alone with her tears. Tenzin notes that Amon has escaped and if they could find and capture him, perhaps they could force him to heal Korra. Boat scene. Ending.

There, now you have a setup for the next season to spend some time for Korra to connect with her spiritual side and regain her abilities as well as develop her air bending before that.. Time to develop emotionally and come to terms with her relationship with Mako. It leaves the audience on the edge of their seat waiting for the next season. Instead we get a bit of a cop-out, 'everything is alright' ending. She gets her powers and the guy. No real sacrifice required.
Re: The Legend of Korra - Kor - 06-26-2012

I agree with you HeK, that would have made for a very compelling second season. Alas, the entire season was written in the knowledge that it was originally going to be a mini-series. Self-contained series give great latitude, but little in on-going continuity. Sad  All-in-all, I'm satisfied with the conclusion. Despite missing an opportunity for great pathos, repeating what we already saw done in TLA would have made the ideal of the Aang and Korra being very different avatars hollow.

Sufficed to say, I'm sure we're all eager for the next season already.

Re: The Legend of Korra - Squishy3 - 06-26-2012

It's going to be interesting to see an entire series about a fully-realized Avatar though.

Great news! Not only will there be a Book 2 of Korra, but Nickelodeon just announced they've put in an order for 26 more episodes after that!
