It's not gold that needs patching, it's BC2 client.
Silver on GameServers can swap between R8 (Able to turn off PB) and R9 (Not able to)
Gold on NFO can't, and is locked on R9.
Servers that are running PunkBuster are not listed in the server browser.

actually, pb servers do show up, but you have to search for non pb servers to get them
