I believe it's the first part of the story involving Felix Castor, so before Vicious Circle. It's great so far, read it if you like horror mixed with humor and noir.

Hell yea!!! This is the series I keep blathering on and on about. I just finished book 3 which is only available in england and if you are lucky amazon re-sellers. The 4th book is about to come out in England so I'm going to have to figure out the best way to import. The third book is as good as the first and the second is better than both.

It's narrated by Death, and it follows a German during the late 1930s and on as she grows up.
Death is intrigued by this girl, and so follows her, detailing her life in his own grim way.
The most fascinating things in this book have to be that:
A) Death is narrating it and he describes all he sees by the colors of the sky (In the one part he describes Stalingrad's sky as though it is pure-white like freshly bleached sheets, and every day it is soaked in blood, little bit by little bit, and then re-bleached over and over).
B) About the holocaust, but instead of the protagonist being a Jew, it's a German.

I forgot to recommend Dune by Frank Herbert. Was one of the first scifi/fantasy books I read and still one of my favorites ;D Unfortunately I lost interest in the series after DuneÂ

Rofl. The first 2 are very good, the 3rd is shaky at best. The rest are shit as they're so ridiculously convoluted, I swear it takes a degree in philosophy to wrap your head around some of the later books. Once Frank died, his son picked up the franchise, and while I've never read one of them, I've heard those are garbage as well. But yes, early Dune = winÂ

Seriously, the best zombie novel I have ever read. Trust me, when someone is called the Studs Terkel of Zombie Journalism, you know it's going to be good.
I'm surprised no one here mentioned non-fiction or philosophy.
Oh, and definitely, the Ender's Series by Orson Scott Card . I hear they are making this into a movie, but i'm too lazy to spend thirty seconds finding out the answer. *Ah, apathy...
