Re: Gustav ??? - Fail Medic - 09-02-2008

It's pretty much over with!  We just got back power as of 7AM CDT after losing it 3PM yesterday.  Hot, dark, sticky night.

There's hardly any damage in my area.  My place of residence had a storm door ripped open, minor skirting damage, and one of our porch staircase risers went.. somewhere.

We lucked out on this one.  Totally lucked out.  Fay (sp?) screwed Gustav over a little bit, it seems, and it didn't strengten to what they thought it would.  I know the coastal parishes took it on the chin, of course, but many inland reports are "it's not as bad as we'd thought."

I may stitch something together for a movie (nothing really exciting to show >_> ), but for now, I'm gonna enjoy A/C again.

+1 for still being in one piece.

A cynic might ponder whether the whole situation was deliberately over-hyped by the media so as to show the republican government actually making an effort at handling a crisis?

I'd be hard-pressed to debate you.  The strength of the storm was indeed overestimated to a degree and my Mom has complained a couple of times about how they (the forecasts) scared her more than they should have.  At the time, I wasn't worried about politics.  Unless all the satellite and radar loops were faked, this looked like a bad motherfucker coming for us.  It did punch us in the gut just like all the models kept thinking it would, and there are consequences from its strike.  At this point, my belief is that every precaution taken in advance of this storm was appropriate.

There's a lot less finger-pointing on lack of preparedness, heh, because of all the preparation, so that's a welcome change.  Also, New Orleans is relatively unscathed, the levees kinda overtopped but didn't give way, etc., so that's a big difference between Katrina and Gustav.  Hell, the media this morning is more concerned about Vice President candidate Sarah Palin's pregnant teenage daughter than the lack of widespread devastation Gustav promised them.

I don't know, Budr.  Maybe, maybe not.

Everything has been overhyped since that hurricane season a couple years back, we got raped in Florida and then Louisiana got mega raped.  Now everything is Armageddon.  I'm waiting to see what the coverage of Hannah is like, also behind her Inigo.

Maybe they'll use my name for "M".  Then I can watch me devastate my country.

Well, with any luck, it'll downgrade when it hits SC and not destroy anything when it reaches us.  :-\
