I work for a local provider of cell phone, TV, Internet, and phone services. I do offline work now (thank god). Rarely take phone calls now, do reports and stuff.

Electro-mechanical engineering student/cynical grocery store employee.

Re: - FlyingMongoose - 01-31-2015

I'm a programmer, general tech support, and server administrator. I have no degree. It has held me back but the fact that I have taught myself almost everything I know in my profession has actually made employers be truly interested in me.

As years progress someone with my history and knowledge seem to become more desirable

Finance Manager at a consumer products company, specifically food. Supposed to be getting one direct report soon (assuming we can find someone qualified in a timely manner). Ive generally stayed at companies for two years before moving on and almost did for this one as well except they promoted me into management.

I'll probably stay for another two years before I attempt another vertical move up and find a new job. I find that waiting at any company for a position to open up is really too much, and you'll get the biggest pay bumps switching companies. Typically internally inside a company no matter how well you do the year over year raise will be 2-5% and that's typically just enough to cover inflation and especially if you're a top performer I find it a bit ludicrous that companies will shell out the absolute minimum and will then scratch their heads over the turnover.

I do Linux (Red Hat) support at a particle accelerator lab.  I also do Windows support and though I do like Windows too I hate solving other people's problems on it.

This is really my plan.  I'm about one year down and in the next year my ideal goal is to get a real-life Red Hat certification, or at least the ability to say I have almost two year's experience supporting/managing RHEL environments.

Re: question for _________ - Didzo - 02-02-2015

I do research related things at a lab that works with viruses. I'm building experience figuring out how this research thing works top to bottom and working on pushing out some small first author publications. Hopefully this will enhance my chances of getting accepted into some kind of post-graduate degree program despite my mediocre undergraduate GPA once I finally start applying.

That being said, I don't know what the fuck to do with my life.

I work at a credit union fixing other people's mistakes and freezing accounts for restraining orders and tax levies.  There is never a lack of either and I'm always given more stuff to do because I'm really too smart to work there.

Got offered a job in Los Angeles a couple of years ago, so I came out and build the A/V infrastructure. Then they offered to move me out to oversee post production/technical operations.

Re: question for _________ - MissBiz - 02-02-2015

I work at a software company that makes products for laboratories.  Started out in general tech support and have worked my way up to a position with a random ass title that basically means I am a Product Specialist, Application Specialist, Knows Things Most People Don't Know About Our Own Customers And Software.  My 6 year work anniversary is coming up and I really have no idea where the time went.  I have managed to convince them that the work I do is good and they have adjusted my pay/position accordingly.

Big mix up in the near future though, my team is being moved under the Project Management umbrella, so I'm sure my job functions will change.  However, I have enough respect that they usually leave me the hell alone when I tell them to make someone else do the dirty work in exchange for me giving them the instructions.  The hard part is finding someone who knows how to follow instructions  >Sad.

Re: question for _________ - Surf314 - 02-02-2015

I do legal consulting on tech and competition issues.  It's a really weird job and I managed to land myself in a small firm that does some pretty cool work in this area.

I make sandwiches at Panera Bread.

Re: question for _________ - Xineoph - 02-02-2015

I work in a library, trying to make sure that everything gets paid.  It's more challenging sometimes than it sounds.

I'm a system administrator for Windows, RHEL, and HP-UX servers with a bit of networking thrown in for good measure. I started out doing mostly tier 3 support but in the last few years I've finally been moving more towards engineering and design which I find far more interesting that support. I've been working at my current employer for about five years but on different projects. I was dead set on leaving for a while until my current managers started showing some love and I've been getting some more interesting work. I'll probably stick around until we lose our contract which will likely be in another two years or so. Hey at least I'm getting some experience with virtualization and cloud infrastructures.

Let me know when you want to start looking again.  While I do support and stuff it is internal to an IT recruiting firm (we have contact and direct hire). and operate in US and Canada.  I can add you to our database (or anyone else for that matter).
